Ron’s Bookshelf
SGR’s 10 in 10 Note – May 29, 2024
From Ron’s Bookshelf:?
by Brooks Williams?
Everything changes. We know this. But today, things seem to be changing at an accelerated pace, including the relationship between people and their government, especially local government.?
In Rising to Serve: Reimagining Public Administration for a New Era, City Manager?Brooks Williams (Ferris, TX) talks about those changes and both previous and potential government responses to them. He takes a hard look at the unrealistic expectations for local government on the part of citizens and the rock-and-a-hard-place choices those expectations leave for its public servants.?
But, as the book's introduction makes clear, this is not a book of grievances. Instead, it’s an ambitious book that lays out an equally ambitious strategy for challenging how professional public administrators will move forward.?
Change is indeed inevitable and it’s happening fast. Rising to Serve offers an unflinching look at where we are, how we got here, and how we might rise and move forward. It’s a good read for anyone interested in public service—leaders, elected officials, or the public. I hope you’ll take the time to read it. I think you’ll find it worthwhile.?
Have a good week, everybody.

If you’re a senior executive with the flexibility to do so, block out time to be curious. If you can, let your team members do the same. Keep an “I wonder…” list, and explore it weekly. There’s another river down there. I wonder if it has any trout?
Like yeast is to bread, we each have a powerful ingredient that is at the core of what makes us good and valuable to others. This is a unique strength, that when managed properly, improves the impact we have on our work and our environment.
