"EFFICIENCY" The RVV 'Tour of Flanders' winning difference was definitely a class of intelligent bike racing. If you see the data from the riders there are some clear stand out points off the new generation and the extensive work done in the sports science over the last decade. From tyre pressures, Anaerobic and aerobic systems, to understanding nutrition, this is a positive change in a fantastic sport... Swimming, athletics and horse racing have previously lead the way in innovative integration of training intensities, training frequencies, nutrition, recovery and understanding physiology. Times are starting to change for cycling in a positive (no pun intended) way;
1. Recovery of the favorites is phenomenal from the start of the race to halfway and then again between sections, the low heart rate and HRV, cooling, glycolysis is dominating how the race is raced on efficiency. Better nutrition, improved comfort, breathable or energy saving clothing, lesser Crr, improved CdA all leading to energy saving. P = F x V
2. Fuelling correctly is clear to see how the lactate buffering and Energy (ketones) sustainability is now used in nutrition to sustain strength either in AnC sprinting up the climbs or in the sprint finish, "what's left in the tank". energy efficiency= EE/EC x 100%
3. The power data is not massively impressive, but more to the point it is how the power is used. Thankfully the days are gone where they raced hard to the climbs and then even harder over them still riding with big groups to the finish. Obviously the latter was artificially manipulated.
4. Better improved understanding of Crr x EE x Cw/kg
Conclusions: times are changing, riders are lesser diesel types (No more 42X21 Koppenberg) and more torque orientated and fuelling their engines with the correct NATURAL formulas. The new talented riders are being brought on with scientific knowledge to maximise their engines potential by using new generation innovative products, such as aerodynamics outdoor testing, new generation nutrition, new clothing innovation, new drive train lubrications, new tyre compounds and designs to the rims....
