Rome wasn't built in a day - Neither is Success
get great at where you are
"We will chase perfection, and we will chase it relentlessly, knowing all the while we can never attain it. But along the way, we shall catch excellence."?—?Vince Lombardi
Over the holidays I had too much time in front of the TV. I noticed a lot of commercials. Some were very funny but many others were selling us the wrong ideas. For example, the commercial that says Rome wasn't built in a day because they ran out of Red Bull.
As you think about what you want to achieve in 2022, consider getting great at where you are and who you are. Building good habits and processes that you use over time to help you get great. The best way to create amazing results in the most important areas of your life is through daily practice.
How you do one thing is how you do everything.
Greatness becomes a habit.
Rome wasn't built in a day, and success isn't built in a day either. I remember seeing the Colosseum years ago. It was built with great precision by a team of thousands and took over eight years to complete. Compare it to some of the big box structures made a few years ago, many torn down or just empty shells now. Do you want your success to last long and be noticed for the impact it makes, or have it be here one day and gone the next?
Show up, show heart, use your greatness, consistently do the hard work that will get you where you want to be, and that will allow you to become who you want to become. Keep at it.
"Don't think about the next job; focus on doing the best at the job you have. Learn everything you can from everyone you can. Focus on the possibilities of each job, not the limitations."?—?Robin Sharma
I often come across the saying, "Don't compare your Chapter One to someone else's Chapter Twenty." Success takes time. Recognize that those who we compare ourselves to also experience struggle as they move through life. It is in struggle we learn, and it is in failure we grow.
I continue to realize that excellence doesn't come with a name, a title or the number of years you put in. Excellence is earned by continuing to get great at where you are. We achieve things with the attitude, effort, heart and character we put into what we do.
When we are focused on our goals and dreams (which is great) we often forget about right now. This is the moment that makes you.

Get great at where you are right now, at what you do right now, and it will help you at a later time to do more of what you want to do. I worked toward excellence for years in sales. It was hard. I didn't love it, but it allowed me to do what I do now, what I love.
No question, it can be challenging, but know this is a season, not forever. So to get through the hard, focus on the benefit of how it can impact you and others in the future.
This applies personally, too. Enjoy where you are, what you do, and who you are with at home. Get great as a partner, a parent, a family member. Do it now. Don't wish time away and wonder what it will be like in 5 years. I did that way too often. You don't get that time back.
Did you notice the Lombardi quote said perfection can not be attained? To the perfectionists out there (I am one too), we often wait for things to be perfect before taking action. If we want the thing we are going after to be perfect, it won't be. Taking action allows excellence to take shape.
A benefit of getting great at where you are - you will be heard and seen. You will have more of a voice if you get great at what you do and who you are. People will tend to notice; they will ask for your input, ask you to be on the team, and see you for that next thing in the room.
