When two adults are single and involved in a long-term loving relationship, perhaps cohabiting, but not wishing to marry or find it too early to declare a domestic partnership, the partner is often termed “significant other.”?I suppose this expression was designed to replace the adolescent term “girlfriend.”??I’ve been divorced for 20 years, in my 70s, and two years ago I fell in love.?Surprise! Surprise!?It’s true, as the song states: “Love is lovelier the second time around.”
So here was my dilemma. I was going to an event where many people weren’t aware that I had this special person in my life.?How could I introduce him in a way that reflected we are a couple--not just casually dating???I was not fond of the term, “significant other.”?I don’t know--it just didn’t roll easily off my tongue, seemed antiseptic, and felt awkward, so I searched for a way to express how we really felt about each other.?The result??DARLING COMPANION or DC.?It says it all!?We spend lots of time together, as he is truly my constant companion.?Additionally, he is genuinely my darling, defined by the dictionary as an affectionate form of address for a beloved person.??
So, I offer this term to those of you who may be in a similar situation and would like to add this nomenclature to your vocabulary.?Remember, you heard it from me first!

2 年Ok, I'm trying this out. I have been using "partner", but that feels like we are in a law firm. I don't care for it, and as we are individuals both well north of 50 - GF or BF is just juvenile. DC - I like it a lot, I will let you know how it feels! ??
