On Tuesday July 12th, Carpathian Single Malt Whisky was first unveiled to a distinguished guest list in the historic surroundings of the Royal Automobile Club (RAC), in Pall Mall. The event was attended by Laura Popescu, the Ambassador of Romania to the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland, Alexandru Dodan, Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of Romania to the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland, and Nawaf Salameh, Founding Chairman of the Alexandrion Group. ?

The following afternoon a select group of press and media representatives – including Inside Food & Drink – were treated to an intimate lunch at The Ivy West Street, including a tasting session on Alexandrion Group’s three new Carpathian Single Malt variations.?

Carpathian Single Malt is made using 100% malted barley produced in Romania. This single malt is distilled, matured, and bottled at the Alexandrion Saber 1789 Distilleries, located in Bucov, Prahova County, near the Carpathian Mountains. The first ever Romanian single malt whisky is made with pure Sub-Carpathian water, renowned for its quality, is natural colored, unchill filtered and bottled at 46 percent alcohol. ?

Three unique finishings?

Alexandrion Group’s single malt inaugural limited edition consisting of only 930 bottles comes in three ‘finishings’: Feteasca Neagra & Pinot Noir, as part of the Romanian Wine Cask Selection, and Madeira, as part of the Spanish & Portuguese Wine Cask Selection. Feteasca Neagra and Madeira finishing were initially matured in first-fill Bourbon casks, while the Pinot Noir expression was exclusively matured in Romanian Pinot Noir casks. Another world premiere in terms of single malt production brought by Alexandrion Group is the fact that Carpathian Single Malt was matured in Romanian wine casks.

It is much in-keeping with Mr. Salameh’s status as ‘Keeper of the Quaich’, brand innovator, entrepreneur and philanthropist, that he has brought Romania’s first-ever single malt whisky to its spiritual home, and already received some excellent feedback from contemporaries. Master Distiller, Allan Anderson is certain that as the Carpathian Single Malt further matures, “this exquisite whisky will, without doubt, become one of the best in the world”.

If pushed to pick a favourite of the three finishings sampled at the event, whilst the trio all stood out in their own right, the Feteasca Neagra finishing was exceptional. Remarkably smooth with a subtle honeyed fruit note on the nose, the taste was a moreish woody wave that enveloped the palate. This whisky had such a welcoming and recognisable taste, it is truly a testament to Allan Anderson, Nawaf Salameh and the rest of the team as it fits so well into a crowded market of single malts, while simultaneously standing proud from the rest.

Developing ties between Romania & UK

The Carpathian Single Malt is a product which is importantly showcasing the incredible natural and cultural assets of Romania, whilst developing further positive relations between the UK and Romania, all core ethics Mr Salameh implements in all Alexandrion Group’s products and under the group’s umbrella.?

The Week UK described Carpathian Single Malt on their ‘Tried and Tasted: 50 of the world’s best whiskies’ article: “With its robust flavour and complex taste, this new world whisky is more like one from the old. Either way, it’s a welcome addition to the global tour” and placed it at number 1 on their ‘Tried & Tasted’ listing.?

London was the second stop of the Carpathian Single Malt’s global tour which began in the USA on May 25th with a lavish event in Washington D.C. The journey will continue, as Carpathian Single Malt is gradually unveiled to consumers in many more countries and capitals across the world.
