Rolling out electric vehicles in 2022 and beyond

The shift to electric vehicles (EV) has been a slow and tentative one, but the future is electric. Car manufacturers, governments, and industries are all introducing new protocols to prepare for the shift.?

?EV sales have continued a strong and steady push with 1 out of every 20 cars registered in the third quarter of 2021 being a ZEV (zero-emission vehicle). The growth of new EV registrations has been outpacing internal combustion engine vehicles (ICE), or gas and diesel-powered vehicles, since 2012. The EV trend will become a staple in the coming years.?

?Businesses, governments, and the military are increasing their adoption of EVs. The TTC is increasing its electric bus fleet to over 360 vehicles by 2024. In October of 2021, Hertz ordered 100 000 Tesla Model 3 sedans, the largest single purchase of EVs to date. UPS has ordered 10 000 EV trucks which they will be rolling out across Europe, the UK, and North America.?

?Factor in the government’s accelerated plan for 50% of new vehicles sold to be zero-emission by 2030 and 100% by 2035, less than 15 years away, and it is clear we are on a fast track to an electric future.

?Within the GTA, the Toronto Green Standard’s Version 4 emphasizes electric vehicle parking in buildings as part of their mandate to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2050.

?More than 50 new electric vehicles have been announced from big automakers like Ford, Audi, and GM. Tesla’s stock continues to climb, and new automakers are hitting the scene offering new competition to the market and options for consumers.?

?Range anxiety has been cited as a factor for consumers when considering an EV purchase. But the EV Charging Stations market is expected to reach $103.6 billion by 2028. Building owners and property managers will increasingly be facing the installation of EV charging stations over the next few years.?

?Government grants are available to assist with the investment, but there are also many other factors to consider. How will EV charging stations for public use be monetized? Are the building’s electrical capacities sufficient to support EV charging units? How will sub-metering be applied? Do the number of spaces allocated for EV parking and charging stations meet code and standard requirements?

?Installing EV charging stations is a multi-dimensional project. Aside from meeting regulatory requirements, a well-planned EV charging station installation project can provide measurable benefits including increasing the value for tenants and owners alike.
