After the story is told, and the bang-whiz is over, there is this long list of people who were indispensable to make it happen. It is so long, that most of us skip over it and on to the next binge-watching title.
In film business, everybody is on the credits. If someone does something well, you’ll know their name. If they suck at it, you’ll also know. Then, all of those names, also get a chance to compete for the title who was the best in their particular category. “Best sound design”, “Best wardrobe”, the list goes on.
What would be the consequence if the tech industry, and business in general would have a similar attitude? Would it have some special effect on how much effort and passion people put in their day to day work? Would it be more fair?
I am picturing the yearly award ceremony “and the award for best bid management, goes to…”
Some developers and hardware companies do or have done some attempts for this, but it is not widespread. One notable example is Adobe. They have scrolling credits for most of their products, in the “about” section.
Another notable example was the inside of the original Apple McIntosh’s back cover. The signatures of all the members of the design team are in relief on the inside, including those of Jobs and Wozniak. I remember seeing it in person, if you are curious, you can see it on THIS GUY’S WEBSITE.
There is a different version of this “Joe was here” type of inscription, for those who are in for the joke, mostly in the form of “easter eggs”, or hidden features that can only be found after a specific command string is issued. The most ubiquitous is googling the word “askew”.
