Role of Racking & Shelving in Warehouse Management

Role of Racking & Shelving in Warehouse Management

Take a look around your warehouse or distribution center, is your inventory moving as efficiently as it should? Have you ever wondered about the role racking & shelving play in the efficiency and productivity of your warehouse??

A warehouse racking system is a storage solution designed to stack materials in horizontal rows with multiple levels. These systems can help you manage and better utilize your warehouse space while organizing cargo to streamline operations. Each warehouse has its own set of requirements. The right racking system must be able to increase your space utilization without hampering your operations, especially the picking process.?

Shelving is for hand-stacked storage: items in boxes or bins or loosely stored by someone hand-loading onto shelves. When organizing your warehouse, choosing the right shelves is crucial to your success.?

Planning your shelving and racking is very important for your business. Depending on your business, the type of warehouse shelving you choose is integral to your budget as well as the organization and flow of your products. There are many different styles, designs, and makes to choose from, so finding the best warehouse shelving can be a difficult task for a business.

Typically there are five types of warehouse shelving

  1. Steel Shelving
  2. Rivet Shelving
  3. Wire Shelving
  4. Bulk Rack Shelving
  5. Clipless Shelving

Racking system can be classified into 7 types:?

  1. Standard Adjustable Pallet Racking.
  2. Very Narrow Aisle Pallet Racking.
  3. Double Deep Pallet Racking.
  4. Drive-in Pallet Racking (LIFO)
  5. Drive Through Pallet Racking (FIFO)
  6. Gravity FIFO Live Pallet Racking system.
  7. Push-Back LIFO Racking.

The way one sets up and uses racking in the warehouse can help or hurt the overall efficiency & productivity. Increasing efficiency and productivity means strategically placing products and using the right kind of racking based on the specific industry. c It is always necessary to select storage racks based on the kind of inventory. & to place your fastest-moving SKUs together & in the most accessible places.?

The nature of inventory volume and SKU decides the type of racking to be used. If you have a high volume inventory of specific SKUs, a pushback racking system might be the best option for you. If you don’t have a high volume inventory of specific SKUs or you prefer to retain flexibility for expansion, a basic riveter shelving might be your best option.? Often warehouses use both pushback and riveter racking systems to accommodate different SKUs. No two warehouse racking systems will be exactly the same as most effective systems are dependent on the type and scale of work.

Both racking and storing are important for a warehouse as they optimize storage capacity, the safety of both product and employees, increase the accessibility of the warehouse, and lead to better management.?

Racking and shelving in a warehouse, to my opinion, are just derivatives of the overall logistics engineering and supply chain set up of the organization. Off course these are determined by the very physical nature of the goods stored, but more importantly storage solutions have dependency on the inbound pattern and the outbound order structure.
