Access to healthcare is a defining challenge facing our world due to complex health issues, one of which was Covid-19. Health remains fundamental to the achievement of short, medium and long term goals of any society and as the renowed global health thought leader Ifeanyi Nsofor, MD will say, without health, we have nothing.
In my earlier post on public-private partnerships, https://www.dhirubhai.net/posts/ann-obieje_education-health-publicprivatepartnerships-activity-7181202747306737665-0S-A?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop?I mentioned that the government alone cannot fully provide healthcare without some form of assistance from the private sector.
The complex issues faced in our health system require a ‘collaborative approach’ if we must tackle them. They are too large and too complex for either the public or the private sector to address alone, and thus it is essential that the public and private sectors address them together.
Public-private partnerships (PPP) are emerging as innovative solutions for expanding and improving health access.
For example, MTN Nigeria through its foundation signed a partnership with the Private Sector Health Alliance of Nigeria to deliver 52 primary healthcare centres across the country. Prior to this, they had remodelled 180 primary health centres across Nigeria.

However, for a successful partnership between the public and private sectors, attention must be given to transparency, credibility, accountability, and equity. Clear governance structures, robust regulatory frameworks, and effective monitoring mechanisms are essential to ensure that PPPs align with health system priorities, protect the interests of all stakeholders, and uphold ethical standards.
The potential for PPPs to improve health access has never been more apparent. If our goal is a healthcare system that is functional, effective and qualitative, resilient and responsive, then PPPs are critical.
The future is collaboration!
