The Role of Psychometrics in People Development

The Role of Psychometrics in People Development

?

I get asked a lot why we always look to include behavioural models in our work with clients. Often, it's because businesses are looking to shave costs out of things, and yet to me, it's false economy given they should want to maximize a return from any training or learning initiative.

?In today's competitive business landscape, leveraging the strengths of your team is essential, and one of the most effective ways to achieve that is by looking at behavioural models through psychometric tools. These assessments not only provide invaluable insights into the personalities, skills, and potential of people – if they are used correctly, they can have a significant impact on teamwork, strategy implementation, leadership, and sales!

?So, what are Psychometric Tools?

?Psychometric tools are standardised assessments designed to measure psychological attributes, including personality traits, cognitive abilities, and behavioural tendencies. They can even look at High Potential, Emotional Intelligence, and adaptability too – all providing objective data, helping organisations make informed decisions about their people.

Benefits of Psychometric Tools in Talent Management

?Enhanced Recruitment:

?The cost of a wrong hire for certain roles can be up to 6x a person's annual salary, including benefits, if they don’t perform and leave within the first two years.

?That makes the obvious starting point to use psychometric assessments as an aid to improve the recruitment process by identifying candidates who not only have the right skills but also fit the company culture.

?There are a number of tools, including the Thomas Int’l Personal Profile Analysis (PPA), which will help reveal whether a candidate's personality aligns with the role and team dynamics. If you add to this an aptitude or emotional intelligence assessment (EQ), and even Belbin's Team Working Report, this leads to better hiring decisions and reduces turnover, as new hires are more likely to thrive in their roles and work well with existing team members. And that can mean a significantly reduced spend in this area for organizations!

?Enhanced Adaptability and Emotional Intelligence:

?Powerhouse organizations now view adaptability and emotional intelligence (EQ) as more critical than having experience when hiring for important roles. Tools like AQai's adaptability assessments help measure and develop employees' ability to navigate change and stay resilient under pressure. EQ assessments evaluate how well individuals understand and manage their own emotions and the emotions of others. High adaptability and EQ are linked to better leadership, improved team interactions, and a more agile workforce. Unlike a person’s cognitive ability, it is possible to develop these qualities and ensure that your team can handle stress, communicate effectively, and maintain high performance during transitions.

?Improved Employee Development:

Psychometric tools highlight areas where employees excel and where they need development. This information is crucial for creating personalized development plans that maximize employees' strengths and address their weaknesses. For instance, a cognitive ability test can identify potential for future roles requiring analytical skills, while personality assessments can suggest the best approaches for motivating and managing different individuals. Regularly updating these assessments keeps development plans aligned with evolving business needs and individual growth.

Better Team Dynamics:

?As mentioned earlier, understanding team members' personalities and working styles leads to more effective collaboration. Tools like MBTI and Belbin help teams understand each other's motivations and behaviours, improving team dynamics and productivity. Knowing whether a colleague is more detail-oriented or big-picture focused can prevent misunderstandings and foster a more cohesive work environment. Teams that understand each other’s working styles are better equipped to leverage each member's strengths and mitigate potential conflicts.

Increased Employee Retention:

Employees who feel understood and supported are more likely to stay. Psychometric assessments provide a framework for ongoing development and feedback, significantly enhancing employee satisfaction and retention. When employees see that their development is being prioritized and that their unique contributions are valued, they are more engaged and loyal. This not only reduces turnover costs but also builds a stable and experienced workforce.

?Developing Client and Supplier Partnerships:?

Psychometric tools aren't just for internal use. They can also enhance external relationships with clients and suppliers. Understanding the personalities and working styles of your key partners can lead to stronger, more effective collaborations. Tools like AQ and DiSC can help identify the best communication strategies and negotiation tactics for each partner, fostering trust and long-term relationships. This strategic insight can drive better business outcomes and create a more cohesive supply chain.?

Real-World Impact:

Over the years, I have witnessed the transformative power of psychometric tools. One client used the MBTI to improve their leadership team's communication and decision-making. Understanding their own and each other’s personality types fostered a more collaborative and effective working environment. The result? Noticeable increases in team cohesion and productivity.

Another success story involves a sales team using the PPA (DiSC) model. By identifying their behavioural styles, we tailored training programs to suit different learning preferences and motivational triggers. This led to a marked improvement in sales performance and employee engagement.

Addressing the Doubters:

It's natural to question the value of psychometric tools and wonder if they truly make a difference.

This isn’t about using a ‘What Star Wars character are you?’ from a social media page??? In most cases these are clinically proven and registered tools that have been developed on sound psychological theorem.

Some might also argue that traditional methods of recruitment and team management have worked well enough so far, so why change?

Psychometric tools provide a level of objectivity and insight that subjective judgment simply cannot. They bring to light aspects of personality, potential, and team dynamics that are often overlooked. By offering a more nuanced understanding of individuals and teams, these tools help organizations make more informed decisions, leading to better outcomes. It's not just about filling roles or managing teams; it's about optimizing performance, fostering growth, and building a resilient workforce ready to adapt and thrive in a rapidly changing business environment. Ignoring these insights means missing out on opportunities for improvement and growth.

If anyone though could tell me how to answer to quiz that gets me to Han Solo and not Jabba the Hut that would be great!

Conclusion:

What I can tell you is this…. incorporating psychometric tools into your next L&D initiative, Leadership program or talent management strategy, will offer a deeper insight into your workforce than you have ever seen. These tools lead to better recruitment, tailored development, stronger team dynamics, and improved external partnerships – and a much better ROI from the effort you put in. By leveraging these insights, organizations can build cohesive teams and drive business success in a faster and more effective way too!? What’s not to like about them???
