The Role of a Project Manager in a Scaled Agile Environment

When it comes to project management, there are a lot of different opinions on what the role of a project manager should be. Some people believe that a project manager is not necessary for a scaled agile environment, while others feel that the role of the project manager is more important than ever. In this article, I will explore both sides of the argument and come to a conclusion about whether or not there is a place for a project manager in a scaled agile environment.

The Argument for No Place for a Project Manager in a Scaled Agile Environment

There are several reasons why some people believe there is no place for a project manager in a scaled agile environment. First, they argue the role of the project manager is more administrative than it is technical. They are responsible for managing the team, planning, and allocating resources. In a scaled agile environment, the team is responsible for managing its own progress. There are no longer managers who need to be micromanaged by an outside party. The traditional approach to management, where the manager and employees report to a CEO or owner, is no longer the best way to run a business.

The second reason why some people believe there is no place for a project manager in a scaled agile environment is that the role of the project manager can be replaced by other roles within an organization such as "Scrum Master" or "Product Owner." The Scrum Master is responsible for ensuring the team is following the agile methodology. On top of that, they have to keep everyone energized and focused so they can get their work done quickly. The Product Owner is responsible for prioritizing the product backlog. They should also collaborate with stakeholders in order to gather more information about how to improve their business.

The Argument for a Place for a Project Manager in a Scaled Agile Environment

While there are some valid arguments against including a project manager in a scaled agile environment, there are also several good reasons why they should be included. First, the project manager is responsible for ensuring the project is completed on time and within budget. In a scaled agile environment, it is more important than ever to have someone who is focused on the big picture and can keep the project on track.

Second, the project manager is responsible for ensuring the quality of the product. In a scaled agile environment, it is essential that all members of the team are working together to produce a high-quality product. The project manager can ensure this happens by coordinating with the Scrum Master and Product Owner, as well as by monitoring the progress of the team.

In conclusion, although there are some compelling arguments for why a project manager is not necessary for a scaled agile environment, I believe the role of the project manager is more important than ever. In my opinion, the project manager’s role is to ensure that all stakeholders are aligned and working towards the same goal, and this is even more critical in a scaled agile environment where communication can be difficult. Without a project manager, it can be challenging for teams to stay focused and on track. What do you think? Is there still a place for the project manager in today’s world of agile?

Is that also the role of release train engineer in scaled agile framework? Teams are encouraged to be self organizing in agile culture, ain't it?

Great summary. Based on my experience, the project management role is vital in scaled agile environments and deliveries.

Great points Kelly and something I think many organizations who are working in a “true” agile methodologies struggle with. The insights a PM bring is sometimes seen in competition with what the SM and PO are responsible for.
