Role of the Project Manager
Dr.Peter Granasy, MBA Program Manager
I lead product development/ process improvement projects on-time, in-budget with right quality in Automotive and Medical devices
In a single sentence, I would define it as the project manager (PM) driving the project to its target with the right quality level by the agreed deadline in the planned budget. It sounds easy, but how do we get there?
It always starts with the requirements: the customer (internal/external) wants something with a limited budget. It determines the size and role/member of the team.
The PM enters into the game around this point.
The PM must ensure the optimal performance of the team, including (Italic if I want to deal in a separate post)
·??????? having the right resources in the team
·??????? building the team
·??????? maintaining effective communication in the team / with other organisations/ customer
·??????? delegating (new topic) tasks
·??????? keeping the stress on the right level
·??????? escalating as necessary
·??????? monitoring progress
·??????? controlling budget
·??????? assuring quality
·??????? representing the team
·??????? motivating / mentoring / awarding team members / celebrating successes
·??????? fostering risk management
·??????? solving unforeseen problems
As the captain of a ship, the PM must take full responsibility for the decisions made. Anyone who makes a mistake in the team, either due to lack of knowledge or capability, ultimately is in charge of the PM.
