As we transition back to school, I find myself reflecting on the role of professional standards in shaping the educational landscape, especially as we teach and lead a new generation of students—Generation Z. This reflection is particularly personal for me, as I’m not only an educator but also a parent to two Gen Z kids. I see firsthand, both at home and in the classroom, how this generation is shaping the future and how we, as educators, need to adapt to meet their unique needs.
Generation Z students, including my own children, are characterized by their digital fluency, social consciousness, and strong desire for authenticity. They value diversity, inclusivity, and learning experiences that feel personal and relevant. To effectively engage and inspire them, we need a clear framework that sets high expectations while also supporting continuous growth and adaptation. Professional standards serve as this compass, providing a shared vision of what quality teaching and leadership look like. As James Stronge aptly puts it, "Standards are not just benchmarks; they are a means to inspire and elevate the practice of educators."?
Standards matter because they offer clarity and consistency, creating an environment where educators and students thrive. They define essential qualities for effective teaching and leadership, providing a roadmap for continuous improvement and emphasizing that education is a profession requiring dedication and growth. In my journey as an educator and leader, I’ve seen how clear standards transform a school community, ensuring that every decision aligns with our vision of excellence, ultimately fostering a culture of care, respect, and mutual empowerment for all.
While there are many great sets of professional teaching standards available out there, I’ve found the Principals' Training Center (PTC) standards to be the most relevant for the international schools we serve and the Gen Z students we teach. The PTC has developed a comprehensive set of standards that are particularly suited to today’s educational challenges and opportunities. These standards are designed to prepare teachers for the unique demands of international and diverse educational settings. Let’s explore each of these international teacher standards and how they resonate with our new generation of students and educators:
1. Effectively applying the most up-to-date, research-based strategies to address the needs of diverse learners.?
Gen Z students thrive on personalization and inclusivity. They expect learning experiences tailored to their unique needs and backgrounds. For international educators, it means staying updated with global educational trends and continuously adapting their methods to cater to a multicultural classroom.
2. Modeling the skills and attitudes of global citizenship, multilingualism, antiracism, and intercultural sensitivity and proactivity.?
Gen Z is globally connected and socially conscious. They value diversity, equity, and inclusion. By modeling these values, educators can inspire students to embrace them. International teachers are uniquely positioned to lead by example, drawing from their own experiences and fostering an environment where all students feel represented and respected.
3. Supporting learning in a culture of transition and mobility.?
Many Gen Z students are accustomed to a transient lifestyle, often moving between countries and schools. This standard focuses on supporting learning in such dynamic environments. For international educators, it means creating stability and continuity in learning, helping students adjust and thrive despite frequent changes.
4. Collaborating positively with all members of the school community (students, colleagues, parents, leaders).?
Collaboration is key to a successful learning experience. Gen Z students value teamwork and community. By fostering positive relationships with all members of the school community, educators can create a supportive network that enhances the learning environment. International teachers often bring diverse perspectives and experiences that enrich these collaborative efforts, promoting a truly global mindset.

5. Meeting the learning needs of learners with diverse language backgrounds in the mainstream classroom.?
Language diversity is a hallmark of international schools. Many Gen Z students are multilingual or are learning in a language different from their native tongue. This standard underscores the importance of addressing the needs of these students. International educators are well-versed in language acquisition strategies, enabling them to support learners in developing proficiency and confidence in their new language.
6. Skillfully and positively contributing to curriculum development and monitoring processes.?
Generation Z students expect relevant and engaging content that connects with their world. This standard highlights the role of teachers in shaping and refining the curriculum to meet these expectations. International educators bring a wealth of knowledge and cultural insights, ensuring that the curriculum is not only academically rigorous but also globally relevant and responsive to the interests of their students.
7. Ensuring that their work results in acceptable and measurable student progress.
Data-driven decision-making is crucial for Gen Z, who are accustomed to instant feedback and measurable outcomes. This standard focuses on the importance of tracking and ensuring student progress. International teachers utilize various assessment tools to gauge learning and adapt their teaching strategies accordingly, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and accountability.
8. Using the student assessment process to improve learning and teaching.?
Assessments are not just about grades; they are tools for growth. Generation Z students appreciate transparency and constructive feedback. This standard emphasizes the use of assessments to enhance both teaching and learning. International educators often employ a range of formative and summative assessments, providing students with clear insights into their progress and areas for development.
9. Thinking systematically, reflecting on, and learning from practice.
Lifelong learning is a value deeply appreciated by Gen Z. This standard encourages educators to continuously reflect on their practice and seek improvement. For international teachers, this means staying adaptable and open to new ideas, leveraging their diverse experiences to refine their teaching methods and better serve their students.
Whether your school already has a comprehensive set of standards for teachers and leaders, is in the process of searching for one that aligns with your values and beliefs, or hasn't yet established any, this moment is a crucial starting point. As professional educators, we have the power to decide to grow in our practice by adopting and implementing standards that elevate our work. Tools like The International Educator (TIE) 's Growth Appraisal Tool (GAT) can support us in this process, helping us gather evidence on how we meet these standards and evolve to meet the demands of the new generation. If our schools already has standards in place, perhaps we can consider looking at them with fresh eyes this school year, connecting them more deeply to the needs of our students.?
As we start a new academic year, let’s seize this opportunity to reflect, grow, and lead with intention. By embracing these standards, we don’t just teach—we inspire, empower, and shape the future for every student we serve.
Happy start of the school year, everyone!
