The landscape of education is rapidly changing, making the involvement of parents in their children's educational journey more critical than ever. Our recent panel discussion explored this theme with a diverse group of panelists, all educators and parents themselves.
?This experience was a first for me, focusing on the #journey of #parents in the new digital landscape. Post-COVID, the prevalence of technology is at an all-time high.
?“A child is the father of the man.” - William Wordsworth
?I have taken the liberty to adapt this famous quote to today’s context: the child is the mother or father of the woman or man who raises them. Children tend to emulate the behavior they experience during their upbringing. There is ample research proving the significant impact of parenting on a child's development. The role of parents and teachers is crucial, shaping the behavior and values of the child.
?Returning to our topic—the role of parents in modern education—this discussion highlights the impact of technology on both parents and students.

Our panelists shared fascinating insights. Teena Murti spoke about the IB curriculum, which emphasizes inquiry-based learning, critical thinking, research skills, and intercultural understanding, all aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The IB curriculum uniquely involves parents, who facilitate real case studies and virtual tours of businesses. This provides students with early exposure to global happenings.

Ms. Famida Choudhary shared her parenting style, which allows her children to choose their hobbies and passions. As an educator who practices what she preaches, she emphasized the importance for parents to understand the pitfalls of technology. She stressed the need for parents to know the details of the devices their children use, activate parental controls, and explore online self-learning tools available to equip themselves.

As a parent, I understand that each parent experiences the journey of parenting with their own belief systems. How quickly a parent adapts to changing times and meets the child's needs is crucial for their development. Helping children assimilate knowledge from the vast influx of information without being overly intrusive is essential. Exposing them to the right information and developing them into well-rounded individuals is vital.

What is learned in school may become irrelevant as children grow. Fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and resilience is key. Mindful parenting helps parents connect deeply with their children, though it is easier said than done. Digital detoxes for both parents and children, along with spending time in nature, are crucial for a child's development.

I am inspired by Khalil Gibran’s thoughts on parenting:

"Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you.”

We need to help children connect with their core, where a guiding light resides. This discussion was a personal awakening for me, reinforcing the importance of #buildingcommunities.
?
It also left me pondering the digital divide between the haves and have-nots. Children from different educational boards and countries will compete in the same marketplace. Through my initial research, I encountered harsh realities in #indianeducation as shared by educators and parents, which were eye-opening. I plan to address these in future posts.
?This panel discussion has also prompted me to consider whether #governments worldwide are providing equal focus and importance to #schooleducation.
