We are genetically programmed to live 110-120 years, but we do our best to shorten our life span, but significantly destroy our quality of life, mainly due to an unhealthy lifestyle. What does an unhealthy lifestyle really mean? An improper diet, active and passive smoking, alcohol consumption, industrial pollutants, stress and many other "gifts of civilization". Due to these negative factors, people's life chances are permanently compromised, and the quality of life deteriorates significantly.
At the international level, we have witnessed a significant increase in the number of elderly people in recent decades. Thus, the number of people older than 65 years, increases from 249 million in 2000 and will reach 690 million in 2030, which will mean a great challenge for the health and social systems, all over the world. But not only increasing life expectancy is important for the elderly, but also improving the quality of life, which can be significantly improved by using complementary and alternative medicine methods.
Romania has valuable traditions in the use of gentle means in the therapy of the elderly, but which can also be used successfully in prevention, or more precisely in slowing down the processes specific to the aging process. Thus, the use of medicinal and aromatic plants, beekeeping products, a diet rich in vegetables, fruits and whole grains, rich spa resources, etc., represent effective natural means in preserving the health of the elderly. The natural resources available to our country in the anti-aging fight are unique in Europe and among the most valuable worldwide.
