The Role my mother played in my education

Having a Mother who is also a teacher was a source of Inspiration for myself to pursue a career in education . She basically had two jobs , the job of being a professional teacher and the side hustle of being a teacher at home for me and my brother .

She was never strict on us when it came to matters of education but she did a couple of things right that helped and shaped me to be a person I am today . She attended every parent consultation meeting even though she knew I was doing well at school , she provided us with a good education that she could afford at the time and she always made sure we understand the value of education and how important it is to overcome poverty and unemployment in the future .

It is common practice for parents to be strict on their children when it came to matters of education and obviously attaching a ' carrot' and 'stick' method to influence the behavior of their children and their attitudes towards education .

Instead of focusing on Grades and other matrix to measure academic achievement she taught us values such as ' Hustle ' , 'Patience ' , ' Gratitude ' and 'Respect ' for authority figures and everyone around us .

Combined with my younger brother we had failed over 5 times at school and never for a second did we have thoughts of giving up on our dreams or giving up on the education system in our country .

Regardless of the challenges we faced Academically and Socially I turned out to be one of the highest performing achievers in both High School and University and I have never looked back ever since because I never 'Gave up ' .

Regardless of my younger brother failing High School three times he still has dreams of becoming a divorce lawyer in dedication to our parents previous relationship and from that experience of failing High school so many times , he has developed an insane work ethic that sees that he studies everyday and reads books on a daily basis regardless of how he feels .. He has never experienced failure ever since and he is slowly becoming one of the highest achieving members of our family and we have no doubt that he will achieve great mile stones in the future .

My passion and dedication to change the education system of our country through home based learning and private tutoring to low income households stems from the believe that some students are not only struggling academically because of cognitive disabilities or disorders but rather the lack of resources from teachers and parents to assist them in times when they need them the most .
