Role of Local anesthetic in suppressing cancer growth

Although the administration of local anesthetics like lidocaine is known to improve cancer treatment outcomes??in the perioperative period, its exact mechanism has not been fully comprehended. Probing deeper into the fact that the growth of human cancer cell lines are suppressed by lidocaine treatment, the study researchers observed growth suppression of cancer cell lines, including cervical cancer HeLa, osteosarcoma U2OS, hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2, and colon cancer SW480 cells.?

Through RNA sequence analysis, they identified changes in gene expression levels in lidocaine-treated cancer cell lines, and GDF-15 was upregulated in a lidocaine concentration-dependent manner, so was apoptosis-inducible TRIB3. The findings are likely to provide actionable insights into the mechanism and thereby help establish lidocaine as an effective adjunct to cancer therapy.
