The Role of Gut Health and Well-being

Many of us have heard the importance of a “healthy gut,” but what exactly does this mean and how does it impact your mental well-being???

Gut health refers to our gut microbiome, an ecosystem of microorganisms (also known as microbes) that live in our digestive tract. These microorganisms are comprised of various types of bacteria, some of which are harmful while others are beneficial to our health. In simpler terms, gut health is the overall state of the digestive system which is maintained by the balance of good and bad bacteria in the stomach.??

How does gut health influence overall health and well-being???

The gut microbiome plays an important role in many aspects of our health and well-being. Not only is our gut responsible for processes from digestion to elimination, but it also supports our immune system, affects metabolism, impacts appetite, and influences our mood. Our gut is called the “second brain” because it communicates with our actual brain and vice versa. Consequently, there is a strong relationship between our stomach and mental health. Emotions such as anger, sadness, anxiety, and joy can trigger a response from our gut causing us to feel nauseas, have an upset gastrointestinal (GI) system, or feel like we have “butterflies” (depending on which emotions we’re experiencing). Since the brain and our gut are closely connected, GI distress can be the cause or result of anxiety, depression, or even stress.??

A few signs and symptoms of an unhealthy gut can include:??

  • GI upset?(stomach pain, cramps, gas, bloating, constipation, etc.)??
  • Trouble sleeping?
  • Feeling sluggish or chronically fatigued?
  • Changes mood?
  • Changes in appetite??
  • Being sick more often??
  • Sudden changes in weight?

With all that we are faced with daily, it is important to not neglect gut health as a critical component to our physical and mental health. A healthy gut can boost our immune system, improve our mood, improve digestion, and leave us feeling more energized during the day. Eating a balanced diet is crucial for maintaining a healthy gut because it provides the body with the necessary nutrients to promote a healthy digestive system. In order to take steps to improve gut health, consider:??

  • Increasing your exercise??
  • Taking steps to reduce stress?
  • Avoiding processed foods?
  • Drinking enough water?
  • Reducing sugar and artificial sweeteners intake?
