Role of Goal-Setting in Boosting One's Confidence As a Public Speaker

Remember when you stood backstage, rehearsing and re-rehearsing your speech once, twice, and thrice? Your hands were sweating, your heartbeat increasing, your legs shaking as you fidgeted with the speech paper you had with you, almost praying to God that you had one more day for practicing to make it flawless as ever.

So how do we tackle this feeling of wanting to wake up from this nightmare, where you can be satisfied by practicing enough? Well, that would need more time than just a few moments before getting cued to the stage.?

There are several ways to do it; one way is through goal-setting. Research has linked goal-setting to increased self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-autonomy. Goal setting refers to a successful plan of action we set for ourselves.?

Ask yourself this simple question:?

What does having more confidence and the ability to speak effectively in front of a large audience mean to me??

Once you've been able to answer the above question, follow these simple tips for better goal-setting:

  1. Noting the goals down: Noting down the goals helps you clarify the work you need to do. Research says you are 42% more likely to accomplish a plan if you write it down. That figure isn't as small as you think it is, for that 42% increases with every practical goal-setting tip you may use.
  2. Break it down: The goal you wrote may seem a considerable feat to attain at first glance. So the easiest way to ease yourself up is by breaking the goal into smaller parts. Breaking down the goal will give you an immediate sense of accomplishment, building the momentum you need to help you carry out the following steps. Even a tiny plan, as small as scheduling the time to rehearse a small part of your speech, may convince you that the goal is easy to achieve. This tip improves productivity, builds skills, gives your overall goal an organized structure, and makes you self-confident.
  3. Schedule: Simply thinking, 'I will do it' is not enough, which is why the proverb, 'actions speak louder than words,' exists. After noting and breaking the goals down, open that calendar and schedule it. Assign one small purpose to a particular day or hour(s) according to the resources you have to prepare for the job.
  4. Explore Resources: This is one crucial step of goal-setting. Before doing anything, one needs to evaluate their resources to complete the job. One can build their knowledge by taking expert advice, talking to supervisors, or participating in self-assessments. Assessments and insights on the number of resources we have, help us realize knowledge gaps and educate ourselves more if needed.

Well, four easy steps, right??

Just the fact that you have cleared up your goal is enough of an achievement to feel more confident. The confidence then turns into motivation which drives you to work further till you achieve those goals. Even if the results aren't as satisfying as you would want them to be, this new-found confidence will be carried over to every new task you need to complete.?

The confidence one may need while standing on the stage and speaking in front of a crowd can be built by their goal-setting while preparing for it. The content of the 'speech,' the audience it is directed to, the practice sessions, the posture you take, the pauses or emotions needed, the outfit you wear, etc., all come under the small goals you could keep for yourself in the public speaking domain.?

By setting goals while keeping in mind our strengths, core values, level of motivation, and a pledge of sticking with the plan with room for flexibility, there is certainly no way we can't reach the goal we ascribe to ourselves.
