You heard it right! Let me get this off my chest!
I was at the Customer Success Festival in San Francisco last week, surrounded by my favorite community of CS professionals from all backgrounds, and had an amazing time. Before we started the session on "AI-Powered Customer Success: Strategies, Successes, and Future Outlook," we asked the room, “How many of you have one of your tabs dedicated to ChatGPT?”
At first, there was some shyness, but soon, 30% of the room raised their hands! ???? It was clear that while change is hard, the CS community is definitely at the forefront of this new AI era.
?? How Gen AI Supports Key Areas of Customer Success
Generative AI is a powerful tool, but remember, it’s just that—a tool. Here are some specific ways to leverage AI to improve customer communication, internal processes, and overall performance.
1. AI for Customer Communication: Managing Tone ??
In mission-critical or sensitive customer communications, tone is everything. AI helps you manage this by analyzing customer sentiment and adjusting your language accordingly. For example, when dealing with a frustrated customer, AI can suggest a more empathetic tone, keeping the conversation constructive and positive. You know your POCs best, so while AI can help, it’s up to you to ensure that the tone feels authentic and aligned with the customer’s expectations. ???
2. Internal Efficiency: Streamlining Briefings and Assignments ??
AI is a game-changer for internal communication, particularly when you're managing multiple tasks across platforms like Slack or email. AI can structure your asks, assign tasks, and ensure no details slip through the cracks. Whether you're updating your team on a customer escalation or delegating tasks, AI keeps your communication tight and your team running smoothly. Example prompt for a Slack briefing: "Create a structured Slack message summarizing the next steps after today’s call with [Client X], including task assignments and deadlines for the team." Your job? Double-check the details and make sure nothing important is missed!
3. Sales and Renewals: Pitching Proposals that Stick ??
When pitching for renewals, upsells, or expansions, AI can analyze customer data to craft compelling proposals. Imagine AI pulling in data on product usage, previous interactions, and customer needs to tailor a proposal that speaks directly to their pain points. However, as the director of this movie, you’ll need to fine-tune that proposal. AI gives you a great starting point, but your knowledge of the customer is what closes the deal.
4. Team Mentoring and Development: Conversation Intelligence Tools ??
Tools like Apollo, Chorus, and Gong are indispensable for listening to calls and mentoring your team. These AI-powered platforms provide valuable insights into customer interactions, helping you spot trends, identify training needs, and offer personalized feedback to your team. AI helps you identify areas for improvement, but your leadership fosters development and growth. ??
5. Follow-Up Efficiency: Streamlining Emails ??
AI can also simplify your follow-up process by categorizing and grouping emails, making sending consistent and personalized messages easier. For instance, after a series of customer calls, AI can generate tailored follow-ups for each, ensuring nothing is missed. This helps you maintain momentum in customer relationships without losing precious time. Again, your role?
Review the output and make any necessary tweaks to make the follow-ups personal and on point.

You need to craft effective prompts to get the most out of AI. Here’s an example of a good prompt structure that can help you in your daily tasks:

Generative AI can make our lives easier, but you are the decision-maker. AI can’t understand the nuances of your customer relationships—that’s your superpower. While AI will help with the heavy lifting, it’s essential to double-check and refine the results.

While AI is fantastic at speeding up tasks and providing insights, it doesn’t replace the value of human intuition and relationship-building. You know your POCs better than any algorithm, and your expertise turns AI-generated suggestions into successful strategies. Use AI as your assistant, but remember: you’re the director of this movie. ??
