The Role of Community Tourism in Protecting Culture and the Environment
Community tourism not only enhances local economies but also plays a vital role in preserving cultural heritage and protecting the environment.? Let's explore the stories of two inspiring initiatives within our Global Community Tourism Network that are making a difference.
Protecting Culture Through Community Tourism in Ecuador
In the region of Manabí, Ecuador, community tourism emerged as a powerful alternative to traditional agricultural activities. In 2014, seven rural communities united to form the Jipijapa Wankavilka Community Tourism Network (Red TCJW), with the goal of preserving their unique cultural traditions, empowering local women and youth, and protecting the environment.
However, the COVID-19 pandemic severely disrupted their progress, reducing their visibility and limiting their ability to attract visitors. Although the communities had the infrastructure and local attractions, they faced challenges in raising awareness among travellers and encouraging visits that would support their culture and provide much-needed income.
In 2022, Red TCJW applied for the Global Community Tourism Fund (GCTF) to implement a comprehensive marketing plan. The support included capacity building, website updates, promotional materials, and even the establishment of a tour agency, WankaTours.
Hernán Baque, Red TCJW's coordinator, shared that the fund arrived at a crucial time and played a key role in helping the community rethink its business model. "It was exactly what we needed to keep strengthening our efforts," he said.
Thanks to this support, Red TCJW continues its mission to preserve local culture, celebrate traditions, and empower the community through tourism.
Environmental Protection Through Sustainable Tourism in Cambodia
On the other side of the world in Cambodia, SPOONS Cambodia is working to empower underprivileged young adults through education, training, and employment in the hospitality industry.
In 2023, they turned to the GCTF to address a pressing environmental issue: many businesses, particularly cafes and restaurants, lacked knowledge in waste management, recycling, and sustainable practices.
The solution came through the SPOONS Green Act, a project aimed at educating the community about environmental protection. With the support of the GCTF, SPOONS introduced reusable lunch boxes and water bottles, helping to reduce single-use plastics. This initiative inspired 65 participants to adopt sustainable alternatives.
The GCTF also enabled SPOONS to expand their impact with tree-planting events and workshops on sustainable practices. In total, 45 beneficiaries, including students and staff, gained skills in organic gardening and waste management, helping them implement chemical-free practices and even start their own home gardens.
For Bunty HUY, SPOONS’ Admin and Finance Assistant, the experience was eye-opening. "Learning about waste sorting during the training was an eye-opener," he said. "Waste is no longer just discarded; it’s a resource waiting to be harnessed."
How You Can Make a Difference
The work being done by organizations like Red TCJW and SPOONS Cambodia is making a real impact on both culture and the environment. But there’s still much more to be done. Every small action counts, and together, we can help empower more communities to protect their cultural heritage and the environment.
