? The Role of Communication Intelligence in Leadership ?

In a fast-paced and ever-evolving world, one skill stands out as the cornerstone of success: COMMUNICATION INTELLIGENCE. Whether you're aiming for career advancement, establishing your brand, or simply connecting with others, Communication Intelligence is key.?

It's not just about what you say, but how you say it that can make all the difference.

Imagine you're given a precious gift—a beautifully crafted box. If it's handed to you with care and warmth, you feel its value immediately. But if it's tossed to you carelessly, even though the gift inside remains the same, it suddenly feels less special, maybe even unwanted.

The same is true of our words. It's not just the message that matters, but the tone, the intention, and the delivery. The way we say something is like the wrapping of a gift—it can either elevate the message or diminish its impact entirely. How we communicate shapes how others receive and respond to us, making all the difference in our personal and professional relationships.

So today, let's talk about how you can use Communication Intelligence to shine through as a leader. Here is how it works:?

Question the "why" behind your words

?“Why do I want to say this? Is it just because it's on my mind, or does it serve a purpose?” In the most historical speeches made by legends across the globe - you’ll notice that behind their idea is a very deep purpose. So yes, of course clarifying that purpose to yourself declutters your content and makes it more understandable. But it also gives your audience a reason to listen to you.?

As communicators, one of the biggest mistakes I have seen people make is thinking that people should listen to them just because they are the ones speaking. I am sorry to say this, but everyone is the hero in their own movie. You need to give them a good reason to give you the spotlight for a little bit. Pause to consider the intent, and you’ll realize that not everything needs to be said. You’ll be able to filter out the unnecessary noise and shift your communication from mere expression to delivering value.

You’ll find your conversation automatically becoming more intentional and impactful. Communication intelligence is about investing your words where they matter most. It isn't about holding back; it's about being strategic. Where time is a precious commodity, every communication should serve a purpose.??

Communication Intelligence isn't about showing off what you know?

When approaching conversations, we often come from the mindset that we must be able to show that we are the experts, that we’re right, and the most knowledgeable. And while there’s nothing wrong with being able to display your expertise, if that’s all your communication centers around, then there’s something you’re not doing right.?

This desire to display how good you are at what you do creeps into your conversations in the form of complicated vocabulary, technical jargons, and excess data. When in reality, you don’t need either of these things to be intelligent, heard, understood, and remembered. The purpose of knowledge being sprinkled into your conversations is just one - for you to be able to establish your credibility, no more.?

If your goal is to be impactful in your communication, you simply need to remember Okham Razor’s mantra - “simple is always the best.” Communicate with people as you like to be spoken to. By not focusing on too much of what you know, you’re able to build in people the curiosity to wonder till where your expertise extends. By focusing less on how knowledgeable you are, you allow space for humility to flourish and that is where connection stems from. That is where impactful communication stems from.?

Shift your mindset from "me" to "them"?

Before hitting 'send,' think about the person on the receiving end. What might be their concerns or questions? Coming from a place of understanding means tailoring your message to address their needs, not just broadcasting your thoughts. It's about making your communication a two-way street. In a client meeting, instead of bombarding them with data about your product, step into their shoes. What challenges are they facing? How can your solution genuinely help them? Let that be the center of your communication. Allow them to see that you understand their perspective so that they know that you’re moving beyond just trying to convince them of a certain product or line of thought.?

Communication Intelligence is about empathy in action. It's about recognizing that everyone has their own agenda, concerns, and priorities. Ask yourself - what’s in it for them? By coming from a place of understanding, you build the bridge that people can meet you halfway on.?

Beware of your ‘Not-To-Dos’?

Assuming is one of the least constructive things you can do, if you ever wish to be intelligent in your communication. The simplest way to be able to combat this is to engage in a dialogue where you’re asking the questions to show that you genuinely care about where the other person is coming from. Asking questions not only helps you understand the other person’s perspective but also gives you the opportunity to let your own ideas flow in a more organic manner.?

Another thing that I have seen people do a lot is jump into consultation mode, the moment people start sharing their problems. Sometimes, all the other person is looking for is someone who can listen to them, not share solutions. Much like with your children, no matter how well you can guide them, if they don’t want it, they will not take it. Sometimes, people appreciate being heard more than being told what to do. So, in conversations, resist the urge to play the all-knowing consultant. Instead, be a participant who listens without judgment. Offer advice only when it's sought, making your input more valuable and respected. By doing so, you avoid being perceived as self-absorbed, and people will appreciate your contributions when they genuinely need guidance. Communication Intelligence is not about having all the answers; it's about knowing when to share them.

Know that your words have the power

Our words reflect who we are. Every word that leaves your mouth, whether while sharing ideas, giving feedback, or handling a disagreement, is your signature in that situation. Words are what reveal how intelligent you are in any communication. You begin developing intelligence in your communication, the moment you realize that the words you choose to use with any individual or situation are what will determine whether you’re leaving the other person inspired, disinterested, or demotivated.?

And contrary to popular belief, your words emanate from your subconscious. So, as you indulge in the practice of using words that add value, I am going to ask you to first observe the words that you use to refer to yourself, and your goals, to describe how your day was. You don’t magically start using constructive language when interacting with others. It begins with you.?

So, the next time you ask yourself, Why does this always happen to me?Ask yourself instead - “What lesson am I being asked to learn from this situation?” You’ll notice that as you become conscious of the vocabulary you use with yourself, the nature of your words and therefore, your interactions with others will automatically start transforming.?

Remember, leadership is not about being perfect; it's about embracing your imperfections and owning your unique voice. So, stand tall, speak with conviction, and let your intelligent communication shine through in every interaction you have as a leader.

Here's to unlocking your full potential through the power of intelligent communication in leadership!
