It is understanding how our brain works is the most compelling statement in this article. It sums up the key element of creating engaging and retainable instruction. Without this understanding, the continued cycle of designing training that fails to produce viable transferable outcomes happens. The biggest complaint I've heard is our training isn't accomplishing what we want so why continue paying for it. The cause is related to how that training is designed. Rather than listening to well-trained Instructional designers organizations are saying we want xyz and that is how it will be presented. The lack of understanding of how the brain works and assuming that there is only one way to present training creates that continued cycle. They're right their training isn't going to work because it isn't considering the right things. Death by PowerPoint is the bain of any good trainer. The other issue is the need to be the "sage on the stage" to "properly" train people. Research and statistics show this is not an opportune way of doing things. Until we educate the people making the training decisions about the correct way of doing things, we will be stuck in the routine of putting out training that will fail.
