The role of Civil Engineers towards Global risks 2020

According to the Global Risk Report 2020 ( which can be found at https://www3.weforum.org/docs/WEF_Global_Risk_Report_2020.pdf)

via World Economic Forum that the following risks are the most dangerous threats that can impact the human race existence in the planet:

1. Climate action failure 

As shown in Fig. 2 and Fig 4 in the report that Climate failure has the most threat impact and more than other threats that may sounds more risky in the media such as terrorist attacks , cyber-security, and Weapons of mass destruction.

Additionally, as shown in Fig.4 , it dose has connection with all other major threats and therefore solving the climate change problems will help to solve the root cases for other treats.

2. Water security

3. Failure in Urban planning

4. Failure in infrastructure

5. Harsh environment,

As you can see, all the major threats have a deep and direct association with Civil engineering and as civil engineers we need step up and take action about it.

Being a Civil Engineer is a great honor, yet it comes with great responsibilities towards our community since we are called “ Civil” Engineers. 

As, Civil Engineer, my advice is to all major Civil Engineering / Construction corporations and professionals that to stop seeing implementing “ Sustainability” as cost or burden, but to see it as vital and profitable investment for present and future.

In the end , I will quote The Editor of New Civil Engineer in her latest article in April issue, 2020, Infrastructure carbon Conundrum.

“These challenges are here to stay and will only get harder, so maybe in the future we will all be climate change engineers rather than civil engineers”.
