Radiation oncology is undergoing a transformative era with artificial intelligence (AI) at its core. From automating contouring to adaptive radiotherapy, AI is reshaping cancer care delivery. This post highlights key advancements, emerging trends, and their implications for the future of cancer care.

Advancements in AI-Driven Radiation Oncology

Automated Contouring

Manual contouring of organs-at-risk (OARs) and target volumes is one of the most time-consuming steps in radiation therapy planning. AI-based tools are addressing this challenge, improving efficiency and accuracy while allowing clinicians to focus on patient care.

Future Trends in AI for Radiation Oncology

AI Enhancing Workflow Integration

Emerging tools like LLMSeg, a multimodal AI model integrating clinical text with target volume delineation, are revolutionizing radiation oncology workflows. (Oh et al., arXiv, 2023).

End-to-End AI Automation

Transformer-based models like Swin UNETR++ are paving the way for fully automated radiation therapy workflows (Wang et al., arXiv, 2023)

Bridging Gaps in Access

AI is democratizing access to radiation oncology, particularly in underserved regions:

• Hundreds of thousands of cancer patients in low- and middle-income countries lack access to radiation therapy (Christ et al., Adv Radiat Oncol, 2023).
• The Radiation Planning Assistant (RPA), developed by MD Anderson Cancer Center, automates treatment planning, making advanced care accessible without requiring specialized expertise (Bloom et al., MD Anderson, 2024).

AI’s Role in Patient-Centered Care

While AI enhances efficiency, it cannot replace the empathy and clinical judgment of radiation oncologists. A study from the European Society for Medical Oncology highlights how AI-driven workflows reduce burnout, enabling oncologists to focus on building trust with their patients (Heudel et al., ESMO Open, 2024).
