AI-Powered Solutions: Beyond the Hype

AI-Powered Solutions: Beyond the Hype

Are there any two words that make people more excited and worried in the business world today than "artificial intelligence" and "AI"? Experts say that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will either be the most important tool in human history or it will kill us all. In the end, things will probably be somewhere in the middle, but one thing is for sure: AI is here to stay and will change how we all live and work.

We need to know what this disruptive technology is, where it came from, why it has so much promise, and how to deal with the problems it causes to determine how to get the most out of it and the least harm. As you read this article, the goal is to give you a basic idea of AI. This is the first in a series to help you see through the hype and use AI's power.

How does AI work? What is it?

AI is a technology field that lets computers and other tools act smart and solve problems like humans. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a broad term that includes many different AI systems or models, such as

  • Traditional AI: Looks at resources, guesses what will happen, and automates tasks.
  • Natural language processing: Allows computers to understand, produce, and manipulate human language.
  • Audio recognition: Also called voice recognition, which understands and processes spoken words.
  • Computer vision: Finds people and things in pictures and videos
  • Machine learning: Uses data and formulas to copy how people learn, getting better over time
  • Expert systems: Replicate the ability of a human expert in a particular field to make decisions and reason

AI models are sometimes more specific versions of larger groups and often add features from other groups to meet specific goals. Two examples are deep learning and generative AI (GenAI), the most talked-about AI model to date.

Deep learning is a type of machine learning that uses data, weights, and biases to identify, classify, and describe objects in data correctly. It does this by simulating the human brain.

GenAI is a type of deep learning that uses existing data to make new data and creative material (like text, images, video, audio, computer code, and more) that makes sense, fits the situation, and is high quality like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and more.

How did AI get started?

All the recent talk about GenAI might make it seem like AI is a new idea. Still, its roots go back to the 1950s, when Alan Turing came up with the tests to see if a machine is intelligent, and John McCarthy coined the term "Artificial Intelligence" at a conference at Dartmouth College.?

Over the next few decades, AI was still discussed and improved in government and university settings. A chess-playing computer program called "Deep Blue" beat Garry Kasparov, the world's best chess player, in the 1990s, which brought AI more notice.

The internet made a lot of data available to everyone, and improvements in chip technology made computers much faster. This led to a boom in AI technologies in the 2000s and 2010s, with products like Roomba's iRobot, Apple's Siri, and Amazon's Alexa being the first widely used commercial examples of the technology.?

However, cloud computing and huge investments have made the 2020s the busiest decade in the history of AI evolution. This is especially true regarding how quickly GenAI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and DALL-E have changed. More than 10,000 new GenAI models were made available to the public in 2023 alone.

Does GenAI or AI, in general, really alter how we live and work?

It's already changed how we work in ways we don't even notice. Every day, AI is a part of our lives, whether using our phones to find our way, looking at suggestions while we shop, or getting suggestions for answering messages. AI will continue to drive more efficiency, better quality, and deeper insights as its powers grow.?

Many jobs will probably become obsolete or very different because of these changes. However, AI will also create new jobs and eventually supercharge the workforce that uses it well, just like other technological advances have done in the past.
