Why Mentorship Matters

Have you ever had this experience? You’ve had a day: your flight was late, your baggage has gone mysteriously sideways and your hotel- well, they don’t have a room for you. They are oversold.

Early on in my career I worked for a large hotel full of business guests. And I was the team member on the other side of the counter who got to tell you that we didn’t have a room for you and BTW, would you please return the next day. This can be a tough job for anyone!

Luckily for me, I had a superstar boss who was also an A-1 mentor. From him, I learned the arts of leadership, resolving conflict and listening well. Whew, good luck did strike twice!

If you’re thinking, we can just keep what we have…

Sometimes, we just stick with what we’ve got- this can work, there are many firms with long-term loyalty. Just as often, we bring in new ideas and new leaders and there’s a path for cross-generational mentorship.
