Testimonials

Comments by Roger’s British and international students. He has influenced the careers of not only actors but also directors, writers, acting teachers and even politicians. Roger is one of few acting teachers and coaches who can display the value of the techniques he teaches in his own work as an actor; note the comments on his acting ability by some of his students.

Roger always gave me truthful sound advice. I wouldn't be where I am today without his tuition, guidance and support. This man is a wonderful teacher and a wonderful inspiration to all industry professionals. I have a great deal of time and respect for Roger and always will. I hope I’m lucky enough to work alongside him again in the future.

Eva Price on Coronation Street and Strictly Come Dancing Celebrity, Catherine Tyldesley (born 17 September 1983) is an English actress, model and singer. Tyldesley's television credits include Holby City, Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, Sorted, Florence Nightingale and Red Riding. She played the lead role of Iris Moss in the Liverpool-set BBC One drama Lilies. In 2010, Tyldesley played the role of Abi Peterson in Emmerdale for two months. Tyldesley sings in the range of mezzo-soprano and has also modelled for the House of Fraser. Catherine is currently starring in the comedy series Scarborough.

(Roger’s approach)…there is simplicity to it; in what appears to be a complex subject. His techniques offer the solutions in a very straightforward way and seem to always result in success. They are in included in my daily practice and continue to help me in my work on television, radio and theatre. I have seen Roger on the stage and screen and find him a consummate and skilful professional.

Nathan Morris is an actor best known for playing Milo Entwistle in Hollyoaks. In January 2018, Morris was nominated in the "Best Newcomer" category at the 23rd National Television Awards 2018. Later in 2018, Morris was nominated for “Funniest Male” at the Inside Soap Awards; he is atheatre and radio actor, stage director and writer. He completed three radio plays at the BBC. Other credits include directing, acting and writing for BBC Television, BBC Radio, Talkback Thames, Fast Foot Productions, and Birmingham Royal Ballet.

Roger is in fact the only teacher/director from my training whose theory/practise I remember in its entirety and regularly use. As a professional actor I regularly use Roger's theories about objectives and attempts and the breaking point of the scene. His character work was clear as well as concise and always forced one to think of the more interesting choices - which I continually use and now do as second nature.

Shirley Darroch, winner of the Manchester Theatre Award 2014 as Best Supporting Actress as Mama Morton in Chicago, is a versatile Scottish stage performer. Her theatre credits include: Maria Morton in Chicago (Oldham Coliseum); The Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz (Hull Truck); Lisa Barker in Soul Man (Scarborough), Maid Marian in Robin Hood (New Wolsey Theatre), Zoe and Nan in Henceforward, Avonia Bunn in Trelawny of the Wells, Jeannie in Dr Angelus (all Pitlochry Festival Theatre, 2011 season), Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors (Birmingham Rep); Nicola in Girls Night Out (No 1 UK tour), Genie in Aladdin (New Wolsey Theatre); Holly in The Life of Stuff; Mary in The Servant of Two Masters; Monica in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie; Catriona MacLeod in Whisky Galore (all with Pitlochry Festival Theatre, 2009 Season).

Roger is an acting tutor and director whose attention to detail and painstaking analysis of text and context produced some astonishing results at Birmingham School of Acting. He generated remarkable allegiance and enthusiasm for his style of working and his approach to actor training empowered many less able students to find a coherent and workable approach to texts and performance.

Paul Clarkson is a Theatre Director, Olivier Award winning Actor and Acting Teacher, (LAMDA, Birmingham Conservatoire-Acting). In 1984, he won the Laurence Olivier Award as Actor of the Year in a Musical playing John Tallentire in Howard Goodall and Melvyn Bragg’s The Hired Man at the Astoria Theatre, London. He also created the role of Harry Bright in the original production of Mamma Mia! at the Prince Edward Theatre, London. Clarkson performed as Dr Dillamond in Wicked at the Apollo Theatre, Victoria, London until 25 October 2014 and assumed up his position as the new Head of Acting Courses at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School on 27 October 2014.

He is very thorough in his observations and is always able to detect the truth in his pupils. Never letting a moment slip he can get the best acting out of anyone with little effort and his tremendous understanding a difficult text is second to none. Although Roger controls a class with his humour it is his great knowledge that keeps a class on their toes as they don't want to miss anything he has to say. Roger himself is an actor of exceptional ability.

David Durant is Associate Director at the Hereford Courtyard theatre

It was his training (Roger Nevares’) that allowed me to audition and book roles in major motion pictures, national commercials, TV soap operas, and professional theater. It was this training in his classroom in England that transcended an ocean and allowed me to excel in the American market.

I consider Roger the best acting teacher I ever had, and it was what I learned in his classes that allowed me to go on and teach acting at the university level, as well as talent agencies in Philadelphia and New York City.

Christopher Descano, a Philadelphia born actor, studied acting at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire-Acting, in Birmingham, England. After several stage appearances in Birmingham, London, and New York City, he returned to the states in 2003 and landed work in M. Night Shyamalan's "The Village". Several featured roles later, including "Invinceable" starring Mark Wahlberg, Descano was cast in his first principal role in the short film "Holy Sapien", directed by Joel Levine. Descano can also be seen in Pennsylvania Lottery commercials as the character "Razor", the winner of the game Quinto. He is also active in writing scripts and producing independent pilots. In 2006, Descano was presented with the "Actor of the Year" first runner up award at IMTA Los Angeles. He won the "TV Real People" award, and placed 2nd in the "Cold Read" competition. Now managed by Baker Management NYC, Descano currently resides on the East Coast

Roger always tried to challenge my preconceptions of acting and character. One of Roger’s strengths as a teacher is that he does not work in the same way with every student, he does not have a ‘one size fits all’ mentality – but instead identifies where each student needs to work. Roger has a vast knowledge of theatre, film and literature at his fingertips to help illustrate points of style and character to his students. However, despite his agreeable character and sense of humour, Roger is also a slave driver. I have never worked so hard in a class; he never lets a student take the lazy option.

Nicola Sangster’s acting credits include ‘Taming of the Shrew’ at the Globe Theatre in London and Stacey Grant in the TV drama ‘Silk’. She has experience of working on various tours in many of the country's large scale theatres, including Liverpool Playhouse, Bath Theatre Royal, Oxford Playhouse, Yvonne Arnaud, Windsor Theatre Royal and Richmond Theatre. Her work as an actor musician has taken me as far as Singapore.

Roger invariably facilitates the creation of incredible, mesmerizing performances by his students, in the classroom and on stage. His manner is positive yet challenging and his methods encouraging. I've used his techniques ever since working with him at drama school over a decade ago and can't recommend him enough. As a young actor finding my way in the business I found his teaching and mentoring invaluable.

Originally from the West of Scotland, award winning actress

Gillian MacGregor's credits include the forthcoming adventure western The Stolen, critically acclaimed Sci-Fi drama Beyond, A Lonely Place to Die, Street Fighter: Resurrection and Nikola Tesla and the End of the World for which she won the Best Actress award at the 31st International Valencia Film festival.

…Roger also gives a method for everything; nothing is a mystery or just natural talent; everything can be learned thru technique and understanding. I have passed more than a few of these lessons to my daughter and she is enjoying a very successful film and TV career at the moment.

Jon Pegg is an award-winning screenwriter and film director. He is also one of UK’s youngest boxing manager/trainer/matchmakers. His daughter is Kia Pegg, BAFTA nominated and award-winning actress, star of ‘The Dumping Ground’.

Ever since Mr. Nevares first explained to me the basics of his technique I thought "this school is, compared to the others, like the scientific method is to empirical knowledge".

Leonel Ibarra Henry is a drama teacher, actor and musician in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico.

What Roger taught me is for me the very root of acting, it is a technique that has saved me over and over again as an actress.

Maria Ines Pintado is a recognized Mexican actress of film, theatre and television.

He cares about his students and will push them to get the best out of them. His acting 'games' are great fun and his line-learning technique legendary!

Natalie Barker is a British actress working in the theatre, film and television. She studied at Birmingham Conservatoire under Roger Nevares and others.

Studying with Roger is an unusual experience- his personal style is so distinctive that, whilst you might not understand at the beginning of your journey where you are heading, you know you are now aspiring to something bigger and somehow more important than in any previous class. Significantly, Roger's interpersonal skills are also first class; I always knew that he was available to answer my questions and support my experiments in an encouraging way.

Scott Gray has worked predominantly in theatre and radio drama, including a season at BBC Radio 4. He has also worked extensively in higher education as a course leader, and a teaching mentor. He spent three years as course leader, developing and launching the University of Hull's BA Performance programme, delivered at the East Coast School of Art and Design.

Roger has a fantastic approach to the art of developing focused technique making it adaptable, imaginative, reliable, engaging and above all translate directly to performance. Under Roger’s guidance I was challenged, pushed and in a short time developed into a multi-skilled, all round focused and determined performer. I would expect any performer to fulfil and go beyond expectation under Roger’s direction.

Jonathan Davis is an actor, director and Lecturer in Performing Arts at Bournemouth and Poole College.

Roger’s style of teaching has inspired me in many ways as an actor but more importantly as a director. His use of humour to criticise gives an edge to the process. I have a notebook of Rogerisms that always make me laugh even now. There was never a dull moment in Roger’s rehearsal; his brutal refreshing honesty is unique in an industry full of puffery and ego.

Katie Gompertz lives and works in Sidney, Australia. Since training as an actor in the UK she has become a director and an Acting Agent. She is also now a politician running for Labour in Hornsby, New South Wales.

“I can really say that there is a difference between before and after Roger Nevares. And I prefer after.”

Mariana Vega de la Ossa is a Mexican stage director living and working in Canada; she trained under Roger Nevares at the Colegio de Literatura Dramatica y Teatro, Facultad de Filosofia y Letras, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico.

Taught me about not rushing a scene... owning it... confidence on stage... being in the moment..... taking my time!!! I can now learn speeches and scenes much faster than ever before!! .. and I am so so glad that I had the privilege of working with him. He has amazing presence and taught me to use mine the same...

Hester Ruoff is an actress and producer, known for Gerry (2018), The Marine 6: Close Quarters (2018) and EastEnders (1985)

His knowledge and teaching skills coupled with his infectious enthusiasm for every aspect of the craft of acting continue to inspire me to become the best possible performer I can be.

Roger has a masterful command of acting technique and the ability to distil complex concepts and present them in a series of fun, progressive exercises that built upon both my skills and confidence as an actor.

Roger has a powerful, charismatic stage presence. His energy level and commitment to the moment are wonderful to watch. I thoroughly enjoy watching Roger on stage, particularly seeing someone ‘practice what they preach’.

John Savage is known for his work on Do Something, Jake (2018), Surveilled and Cyberlante. He played Scottish centre half and football pundit Gordon McQueen in the 2009 film Damned United.

Mr. Nevares is a consummate, relentless artist that encourages those around him - both teachers and students - to stretch themselves and work at the highest level possible, and I can attest to that not only through my own development and discovery, but also through transformations I witnessed in the work on my colleagues, as well as in-depth conversations with them about their own insights, joy and excitement about their work as influenced by Mr. Nevares.

Eyal Sherf is an actor born and raised in Israel. He trained at the Birmingham Conservatoire in the United Kingdom, under Roger Nevares and others, as well as at NYU, for a two-year Master’s Degree in Vocal Performance with music theatre concentration, having won a Jan Peerce Fellowhsip and a Dr. Kurtz scholarship. He divides his time between Israel and New York City. He continues association with Roger Nevares through on-line coaching sessions.

Roger has been the most influential director/teacher in my career. He is very passionate about his work and demands the same passion from all his students/cast, which you happily give him.

Leah Shand is a beauteous and versatile stage performer. She has been working as a comedy actor and comic burlesque performer & writer for three years; she has recently branched into stand-up. Leah has also performed with long running sketch show News Revue at The Canal Cafe Theatre.

Before I attended drama school I had already heard so much about Roger’s teaching and was very excited about being taught by him. He has the ability to engage his students like no other teacher I have ever been taught by. The only way I could describe the content of his classes is ‘gold dust’.

Irfan Hussein is a British Sidney-based film and theatre actor; he has recently appeared in Doctors, Casualty and War Horse, directed by Steven Spielberg, playing the part of Sgt Major Singh.

…without fail the most inspirational teacher I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Roger has a manner of observation, unparalleled in its ability to uncover the smallest of presented untruths and a patience and lightness of touch equal in proportion in its ability to destroy them. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have worked with Roger and although I have made the move away from acting and into music, the skills that I gleaned from our time working together are so fundamental as to be, not merely transferable but integral to the art performance as a whole.

Frank Doody Actor and musician, London, United Kingdom

I find Roger Nevares very cool. He knows so much and teaches with so much joy. I could feel that he loves teaching actors and that’s the kind of person I want to learn from.

Bea-Marie Ruck (Germany), actress (graduate Theatre Academy Vorpommern), Berlin.

I found my training with Roger invaluable - both as a performer and more generally, as an analytical overview of art. His input has informed my subsequent work as an actor and a writer, and I find myself, ten years on, still referring to the tools and ideas he introduced me to.

Imogen Harris Actress and writer. Reader at Oxford University.

Roger is a master of acting technique. My technique and method as an actor are ultimately, becoming my own; however the discipline and simplicity I learnt and still learn from Roger are paramount within the industry. Not to mention an extreme sense of fun and passion for his craft, Roger’s attention to detail and intelligence is inspirational.

Sarine Sofair is a graduate of Birmingham School of Acting and former pupil; a professional actress working in Theatre, Film and TV; recent film credits include Anna Karenina and The Look of Love as well as ‘Skylight’ at West End’s Wyndham Theatre.

I learned more from Roger in a couple of months than I did from my entire 3 year course. The way Roger works was so different to anything other teaching I had encountered. Roger would always strive to find the truth in a piece of acting, and he taught me that there is humour in everything, even the darkly depressing!!

Shelly Dartnell is a London-based theatre, radio and film actress who has toured the UK and France playing in Shakespeare productions and does Voice-Over work.

Roger Nevares is a very precise and observant teacher and director; he starts where other directors or teachers stop. He manages to take off layer after layer of the character until he gets to the core. The humour in his work is one of his strong points, he never has to force it though it comes naturally as he has marvellous feeling for timing and he listens to the characters so the humour develops out of the moment.

Mareike Wenzel is a Berlin-based German actress. Among other theatres she has worked at the Theaterhaus Mitte , the Berliner Theatertreffen with the Danish company SIGNA in collaboration with the Schauspiel K?ln, the Theaterkapelle and the Ballhaus Ost, Berlin, where the play The Dorine Chaikin Institute was voted performance of the year by Berlin's critics.
