Rocky Linux was developed, in large part, due to Red Hat's decision to discontinue CentOS Linux. The first release, called Rocky Linux 8.4, was on June 21, 2021. The project was named after Rocky McGaugh, who was a co-founder of CentOS.
The out-of-the-box experience of Rocky Linux provides essential productivity software, including LibreOffice, web browsers, and multimedia tools. The user desktop experience is user-friendly and supports popular Linux desktop environments, like GNOME and KDE Plasma.
