Norman Rockwell’s “Golden Rule”

Golden Rule is one of the most iconic illustrations by Norman Rockwell, the beloved American artist, illustrator and author.

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

The illustration is an enduring image showing people of the world gathered in unity and prayer. A mosaic rendering of the illustration hangs in the United Nation New York City Headquarters, presented to the UN in 1985 as a gift on behalf of the United States by then First Lady Nancy Reagan. According to an interview with Rockwell at the time he completed the painting, many of Rockwell’s models in this illustration were local exchange students and visitors.

On the top is a photo I took of another mosaic rendering of the same illustration at the Thanks-Giving Square, Dallas, Texas. In 1961 during the time he was painting this illustration for the Saturday Evening Post, Rockwell noted that many countries, cultures, and religions incorporate some version of the Golden Rule into their belief systems. It is a simple but universal phrase that reflected Rockwell’s personal philosophy.

We are all unique in our differences, we are also very much alike. Both our differences and similarities are equally valuable and should be recognized. Appreciate whatever it is that makes everyone unique. At the same time, acknowledge the differences as an expression of the beautiful and rich diversity that we have been blessed with on this planet.
