The UK's leading magazine for automation, motion engineering and power transmission
With the election bandwagon in full swing, Make UK has published a “manifesto” laying out its vision of what the next government should do to revitalise British manufacturing. The centrepiece is a bold, long-term industrial strategy that should be announced within the first 100 days of the new administration coming into power. Make UK argues that the government needs “to shock the UK economy out of its anaemic holding pattern” and take advantage of the opportunities provided by accelerating technologies, investment in infrastructure and the move to a greener economy. This strategy must embrace a skills revolution to provide future talent, as well as the upskilling and re-training of the current workforce. Among other things, Make UK is calling for: a comprehensive review of the Apprenticeship Levy as a funding mechanism, as well as the wider apprenticeship system; the re-establishment of a modern Manufacturing Advisory Service; consultation with industry on where to maintain alignment with EU regulations; and a policy framework for the economy beyond 2030 to counter the US and Chinese lead in green technologies in particular, as well as the need to make the UK an attractive destination for investment. These are all laudable aims; whether the new government sees them as priorities will be a measure of its commitment to the UK’s future as a manufacturing nation.
