Rockstars vs. Superstars (multidimensional career goals)

Not turned on by being promoted or becoming C-Suite one day? Are you not enthralled with the idea of making 200k or more per year?

?

Are you not interested in making headlines or doing Ted-Talks, or leading a big team?

?

This doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with you or that you’re destined to be an “average performer”.

?

Maybe in the future, you’ll change your mind and want to do those things, and perhaps you never will, and either is fine!??

?

Our society has what seems to be one “right” view of what correct “ambition” looks like.?

?

It gives the loudest praise to things like a) High salary b) Status, and c) The individual behind all of it.?

?

This leaves professionals who DO desire income and status feeling like they have to work themselves to the bone at all costs, often feeling burnt out and miserable in other areas of their lives, doing harm to those around them as payment for this ambition.?

?

WHICH isn’t necessary, I do believe in having both btw.?

?

But let's look at how much deeper “Ambition” can run in someone’s bones.?

?

Areas that aren’t talked about or appreciated enough (IF AT ALL).?

?

ONE way is skillful ambition:?

?

For example, My ambition in my coaching goes beyond money and status (I think those things are great too, don't get me wrong) But if those were the only reasons I wouldn’t put in the hours of work that I do.?

?

It’s to deepen the SKILL of facilitating transformation and breakthrough for those who come to me for it.?

?

That is a SKILL and I consider myself highly ambitious to keep getting better and better at that skill.?

?

This is why I coach for hours a week inside my community (Anyone who comes in and raises their hand gets my time and attention on THEIR specific challenges).?

?

A Skillfully ambitious person wants to access the deeper layers of building a skill and master it in a 10,000-hour kind of way before moving onto something else.?

?

This is what I’d call a rockstar, and traditional ambition is super star-like.?

?

Another is Relational:

?

Maybe you have a lot of friends. But how many are close friends or someone you can call at 2 am? You know??

?

Someone who wants to be ambitious with their relationships is not interested in surface-level blah blah, they want the deep closeness, and messiness that goes with learning about someone beyond what most people know about them.?

?

They want that extra layer of closeness and realness.?

?

Another form of ambition is Innovative ambition.

?

We all have innovation inside us, even if you’re not trying to invent the next airplane or personal computer.??

?

We all have this desire to create differently, even if it’s designing an organizational system for your pantry, or programming your coffee maker for your morning coffee using code.?

?

An innovatively ambitious soul will be called to make ideas come to life because it comes from an internal sense of “fun” Not to better the bottom line of a company, nor to impress anyone else.?

?

These are just 3 kinds of “other ambition.” There are countless different types and I’m sure you can come up with your very own list too!?

?

Exploring your ambitions in different senses and areas of your life, can really make you come alive in ways that help you become more of who you want to be, and help you create a life you value and won’t regret when you die.?

?

It’s not “all about the money” but it is about the money and there is nothing wrong with that.? ?

It’s not all about the status or the “position” it’s about the person who holds the title.?

?

It’s about who you want to be, what brings you curiosity and aliveness and excitement to pursue.

?
