THE ROCKET - A LITERARY LONDON PUB

The Rocket is a modern Wetherspoon pub at the bottom of a refurbished office block, built in 1962, close to Putney Bridge. You can watch the Thames flow past either sitting outside on the terrace or through full length windows inside.

Jim?and I wanted to try the new unhindered walk past Craven Cottage (Fulham Football Club’s ground) so we walked from Hammersmith and then back again. While in the pub we ate fish and chips and drank Twickenham Naked Ladies Golden Ale.

In Nicole Canning’s diary Take The Gap - A South African handbook for two years in London (2012) she visits The Rocket for a drink.

In Simone Abitante’s tale of Italian immigrant’s two decade love affair with Fulham Football Club Please Don’t Take Me Home (2022)? there are plenty of mentions of The Rocket such as: Putney is buzzing when we get there and the Rocket is packed ... Rocket pub?by?Putney?Bridge when it's not even midday ... Rocket so we enter the place in hope. Yes, we can be served, but it’s last orders. I hit the toilet and once out I see the boys carrying three or four glasses each. My God. We sit down putting a few tables together … The enormous fish and chips with the boys at The Rocket. The very last drink.

The pub carpet has a yellow and blue design. On the wall of the pub there is a framed picture and accompanying text on the English poet, playwright, and novelist Algernon Charles Swinburne who lived at?The Pines, 11 Putney Hill. “There?Swinburne?found the orderly life he had never known living on his own. Alcoholic excess became a thing of the past;?[Theodore] Watts?made sure that the poet drank only a bottle of beer at lunch.” Oxford Dictionary of National Biography article by Rikky Rooksby (2012). Have had a pub meal there. A well located Weatherspoons with Putney Bridge Station and the buses than stop on Putney Bridge nearby. Also - Hurlingham Books.
