ROCK 105: The Practice of Character

ROCK 105: The Practice of Character

Yesterday, I wrote on 4 Questions for Commitment.

Then, I had an idea.

We ultimately work on advancing character leadership...

... in education, business and community... with educators, entrepreneurs and emerging leaders....

... and work with some 105 virtues, and their respective and daily practice.

Character is too often seen as some amorphous concept around being good and/or strong. It is actually grounded in virtue... or, more specifically, virtues. Virtues are what I like to call the faces, facets and forms of character. And they are not so much developed, as they are accessed and practiced.

Whether you practice Compassion, Loyalty, Simplicity or Zeal... or not... they each exist regardless. This is how virtues differ from values. Values are those things, people and ideas we hold to be important. We value them. Values are what we value. We can value Patience or not. Patience still exists. All virtues are pre-existent and simply need access and practice. And, practice makes permanent.

With that in mind, character is the soil from which great behaviour grows. Take care of the soil, and the tree grows well. It's the hot in the chocolate ... I like to think. That said, over the next 105 days from Monday June 15 through to September 27, I will be offering up ROCK 105, 17 weeks to change your world, one virtue at a time. Sound like hype, maybe even pretentious? I think not.

This is a skill, and I love me also some skill development. Each day, we will focus on 1 singular virtue, and concentrate our energies on looking to see it around us (developing our character lens) and practicing it (building our strength of character). One brick at a time... and coming from a bricklaying family, I understand the power of such focus. It builds great structure and success.

I invite you to join in each day. Each day. 5-10 minutes each day, to learn and start the practice. Consider, practice, reflect and even share. We learn together. There is a practice of Wisdom in that. As the College year ends, starting Monday, I/we lock and load daily.

It is our choice.

Peace, passion and prosperity...

Barry Lewis Green, aka The Unity Guy with Epic Engage

Educate, lead, unite and inspire. Move forward together, stronger. My work is about bringing campuses, companies and communities together, moving forward stronger. I work with educators, entrepreneurs and emerging leaders to do just that. My work is about character leadership and education and its role in helping individuals and organizations build a better world at school, work, business and community. I deliver on it through speaking, coaching and development in character leadership and education. My expertise is character leadership and education. I advance unity in diversity by moving the needle on leadership and education that is high character and results forging. I speak, teach, coach, facilitate, lead, write, sing, dance, cartoon and create on that. In 1980, Professor Rolf Hattenauer changed my life. A highly respected expert in Human Resource Management, he expected much of us and he believed much in us. He was an educator and leader of high character. He was extraordinary. To this day and beyond, I try my darnedest to honor his spirit with my own work. That is another story. But I hope I did him service here.
