Robots Won't Save the American Dream

Recently, Jack Ma, Executive Chairman of Alibaba Group, was quoted in a CNN story saying "In 30 years, a robot will likely be on the cover of Time Magazine as the best CEO… Robots are quicker and more rational than humans, and they don't get bogged down in emotions -- like getting angry at competitors.” 

They don’t get bogged down in emotions? Quicker and more rational? It’s interesting that every major industrial innovation takes us further and further away from emotion, and in turn, human to human interaction. And it’s not a matter of resisting industrialization or advancement, it’s about realizing what happens when we begin removing people from the equation in business – bit by bit, little at a time. And, in doing so, we deny them the opportunity for one of the most basic needs: fulfillment. 

A Gallup statistic I’ve quoted for a long time says that the number one determinant of happiness worldwide is a good job. Here’s another Gallup quote with resonance, this time from a recent column: 

   …the great American dream is to have a good job, and in recent years, America has failed to deliver that dream more than it has at any time in recent memory. A good job is an individual’s primary identity, their very self-worth, their dignity — it establishes the relationship they have with their friends, community and country. When we fail to deliver a good job that fits a citizen’s talents, training and experience, we are failing the great American dream. 

Many say this was a huge factor in the 2016 election, but how did we get to this point? Better yet, maybe we should ask ourselves how and when our leadership in business began to fail “the great American dream.” 

If you look at the Industrial Revolution, when Henry Ford started making Model T Fords, mass production was about mass production. It was not about human dignity or human growth. 

There were many economic benefits. We give great credit to the Industrial Revolution for raising the standard of living in our country, which isn’t a bad thing. Factories for cars, shoes and appliances came to small communities. 

Henry Ford paid people fairly well, compared to what they could make on a farm. But we took a farmer who had a craft and a pride in his craft, (though also an unpredictable income stream) and we gave him a job in a factory. And he went from being a craftsman in his trade or working on a farm and we put him on an assembly line where he put on a hubcap every 15 seconds. 

Then we measured how fast he put on those hubcaps and we thought, maybe we can get him to do this in 12 seconds. Why? Not to create a more meaningful role for this man or woman, but because we wanted to make more money. We wanted to get our cost down so people would buy more cars. We were enamored with mass production and the wealth it created. 

And, because we were focused on wealth creation and not people, Unions were formed to protect the people we employed because we were more interested in our product and our customers than our people. 

At some point, companies started making so much money, we could afford to be nice to people because we needed them to meet our market demand. We gave them vacation time and benefits because we had to compete for skilled talent. But, just as before, we didn’t do it to improve the lifestyle of the person, we did it because we needed them to produce product and wealth. 

All of a sudden, in the 1950s and early 1960s, America started facing more international competition. Their prices were lower than our prices. Once this happened, we decided we couldn’t afford to give that skilled assembly worker in Evansville, Indiana or Toledo, Ohio $15 an hour anymore. 

To maintain our profits and compete, we started moving good paying jobs to places like Mexico, then to Brazil. Factories in Evansville and Toledo were abandoned. Now we’ve moved those jobs to China, because we’re constantly in the search of the person who would work for considerably less than the last person. 

Eventually, those more price competitive imports were of good or better quality. So we went overseas to study innovations in industrial process improvement like Toyota’s Lean. But again, it was never to enrich the person’s experience, it was to eliminate waste. It was never about allowing people to express their gifts fully. 

That’s the piece business has lost and that’s the piece we’ve found on our journey at Barry-Wehmiller. People are capable of doing amazing things if we just give them the environment in which they can discover, develop, share, and be appreciated for their gifts. Creating opportunities through which they can realize their potential and be appreciated for it is how we, in business, can fix the broken American Dream. 

A quote from a recent CBS News article that references a New York Times poll says: 

   … The number of Americans who still believe in the American Dream is slipping. It was 72 percent in early 2009, at the worst of the financial crisis, and 64 percent this past December, in spite of the improved economy… The flip side of the news that faith in the American Dream has slipped to 64 percent, is that 64 percent — nearly two-thirds of Americans — still DO believe in an idea that is often about much more than making money.

People want to believe. It’s our responsibility as leaders to make the American Dream a reality. We can do this by moving away from the singular focus on shareholder value and working toward leadership practices that create environments where people are given the opportunity to express their gifts fully. An environment where people feel valued for who they are and what they do as we collectively aspire to a vision that creates value for all stakeholders. 

Business could be the most powerful force for good if it simply cared about the lives that make it possible. And that’s not something that will happen with robot CEOs.

Hi Bob C., You make some very good - and much needed - points about the relationship that has existed and (unfortunately) continues to exist between many - if not most - organization's/institution's Executive and Senior Management and the REST OF THE EMPLOYEES. The reason I've referred to the relationship using the words and text pattern that I did is because of impression that was created while I read through your article and encountered the way you made use of the words "WE" and "THEY." As it happens, the way I interpret your selective use of those words is as though you are implying that there is (and might necessarily should be) a distinction that needs to be made between those individuals who happen to occupy boxes and titles "further-up" in an organization's/institution's hierarchical org chart and everyone else; particularly those employees who are subject to doing/pursuing the will of those at the highest levels. The reason I mention this is because I - like yourself - pride myself on being an outspoken advocate of TRUE LEAN THINKING AND BEHAVING (ala the TPS/TW), and all it stands for or represents in contrast to a very "un-emotional" (i.e., “it's just business”) capitalistic, corporate world. It's my take on this world - after decades of hands-on interaction and exposure - that the persistent differentiation that's all-too-often made between senior level/executive management and the rest of the employees is an artifact of old-school and increasingly-antiquated beliefs and thinking about what constitutes viable LEADERSHIP within an organization. And as is becoming increasingly evident in the 21st century, such beliefs and thinking is incapable of creating the sort of ENVIRONMENT - internal to any organization/institution - that is most needed in supporting/enabling/facilitating the sort of TRUE LEAN THINKING AND BEHAVING that's vital/central to any organization's/institution's successful pursuit and realization of sustainable operational excellence. The sort of ENVIRONMENT I'm referring to is one which "EMANCIPATES" the fullest discretionary THINKING AND BEHAVING of ALL EMPLOYEES, along with all the other critical STAKEHOLDERS. Now, that said, if you're wondering what I mean or might be referring to in terms of "EMANCIPATING" the fullest discretionary THINKING AND BEHAVING of ALL employees, I'm implying a need for a major paradigm shift regarding the notion of what constitutes TRUE LEADERSHIP… and where it should reside within an organization; especially one that intends to survive and thrive in the 21st century and - ideally - beyond. To explain, let’s consider it to be a given that any and all organizations/institutions would greatly benefit from establishing a compelling TRUE NORTH ORIENTATION (aka STRATEGIC INTENT) and doing so in the form of the following: 1) MISSION/PURPOSE (i.e., primary driving reason for an entity's on-going existence... "WE BUILD GOOD SHIPS HERE"...), 2) VISION and VALUES (i.e., clearly articulated and compelling perspective on what the organization/institution is striving for in a desired/needed future state of being, along with the values it has chosen to strive for and live up to), and 3) near and longer-term OBJECTIVES (i.e., those foreseeable/anticipated important stepping-stones - particularly in terms of needed/desired competencies and capabilities - along its never ending journey toward sustained operational excellence. With such a TNO in place, it then becomes possible for any organization - if it so desires/intends - to transform itself in to a high-performance organization; that is, one that’s capable of pursuing and sustaining “superior behaviors” in its chosen market space(s)… as recognized and acknowledged by its customers and competitors alike. And the catalyst for such a transformation then becomes that paradigm shift I mentioned earlier. The shift is one that moves an organization/institution away from the traditional/customary, and increasingly ineffective, LEADER-FOLLOWER modus operandi (as I believe you’ve allude to in your article), to a more dynamic and empowering one which is more aptly referred to as the LEADER-LEADER modus operandi. In this later modus operandi, the role of a TRUE LEADERSHIP shifts from TAKING CONTROL to GIVING CONTROL , and it involves creating and sustaining that ENVIRONMENT I referred to earlier. To do so, TRUE LEADERS assume primary responsibility for creating and sustaining that ENVIRONMENT by leveraging INTENT. INTENT becomes a catalyst for getting people to THINK. In addition, they spend a great deal of their time and attention on creating other LEADERS - at all levels - throughout the organization. Why might that be a very important thing to spend one’s time and attention on? Well, it’s because the more LEADERS there are communicating and leveraging INTENT, the more THINKING actually occurs at all levels throughout the organization/institution. Those LEADERS holding the most senior positions within an organization/institution become the overseers and caretakers of the emancipating ENVIRONMENT and the new LEADERSHIP paradigm. They focus on building the needed competencies and capabilities (at the individual, team/group, department, and enterprise-wide levels) throughout the organization/institution and evolving them in ways that better enable the entire organization/institution - as an integrated/holistic SYSTEM - to adapt itself to its changing external environment(s) and both the prevailing conditions that exist or are anticipated to come into existence. And in today’s and tomorrow’s world, TRUE LEAN THINKING AND BEHAVING is the only truly sustainable competitive advantage. Why? Because it fosters/encourages/enables on-going rapid/adaptive problem-solving and accelerated learning (at the individual, team/group, department, and enterprise-wide levels). In conclusion: Considering the possibility that what I’ve just state may be a bit difficult to imagine in a working context, I believe it would be of value to take 10 minutes to watch a YouTube video that describes the remarkable transformation that occurred on a United States, nuclear-powered, attack submarine (i.e., USS Sante Fe) based on a transition to this new LEADER-LEADER modus operandi. Very good heartfelt article i think but that's not going to happen because the bottom line is about profit. Also I think we can expect to see a reduction of jobs in many areas as we continue to digitize and automate so many different industries. Advances in technology always have pros and cons. Who is first in putting people over profits? or when profits go down? Please step right up.
