Robotic forming and sealing of cartons in intralogistics systems EtE?flow

From this article you will learn:

  • how robotic cartoner is made
  • how does the process of forming and sealing cartons look like

Introduction

One of the components of flexible intralogistics systems EtE?flow might be robotic machine to forming and sealing cartons, called cartoner. It can cooperate with palletizing EtE?flow Pallet Cell.

The cartoner is part of a robotic carton forming system and is a response to the need to automate the carton assembly process – especially for clients, who have to support several formats of cartons at the same time.

?

How it’s made?

The robotic cartoner, which is part of the intralogistics EtE?flow system, is made up of the following elements:

1.?????? Adjustable carton magazines (maximum 5):

  • Horizontal axis adjustment range (sum of dimensions: length + width of carton): 640 – 1050 mm,
  • Vertical axis adjustment range (sum of dimensions: height + width of carton): 550 – 930 mm,

2.?????? Robot Kawasaki Robotics RS020N with underpressure gripper.

3.?????? Bottom flap sealer

4.?????? Exit conveyor from the station

Depending on your needs, the machine can be equipped with additional options:

  • Single-axis labeling machine
  • Automatic sealing machine with top flap closing and adjustment to the carton size (after packing the subject)

?

Example

Information about which carton will be picked up and formed by the robot is sent to the machine from the production management system. Each product has an assigned specific type of carton. The product arriving at the station can be scanned (barcode/QR or RFID) - and on this basis, the appropriate carton is selected.

Forming is performed by a Kawasaki Robotics RS020N robot. He takes box from one of the magazines and then shapes it. After forming the carton, information about the reference number from a given machine is sent to the production management system – with a request to print a label on the labeling machine. During this time, the robot holds the carton in its gripper with the appropriate side facing the labeller.

After receiving information from the labeling machine about printing the label, the robot puts the carton on the conveyor leaving the station. There is a sealer installed in the conveyor line which automatically seals the carton from the bottom.

What happens to the box after moving outside the robot’s working area? Various scenarios are possible here, depending on the configuration and user needs. For example. It can be transported by roller conveyor to the picking station, where the appropriate order will be completed.

After packing the products, depending on the choice of protection method, the carton automatically passes through:

  • One machine for closing and sealing top flaps (type I sealing)
  • Or by two machines (type H sealing)

?

Then it goes to the Pallet Cell, where it is placed on a pallet. Once the pallet is completed, it is transported to the warehouse by an Agilox mobile robot.
