TIKTOK ANNOUNCES CREATIVITY PROGRAM

TikTok has announced a new initiative called the Creativity Program, which aims to help creators foster their creativity, generate higher revenue potential, and unlock more real-world opportunities. The program is currently in beta and is invite-only, but it will become available to all eligible US creators in the coming months.?

To be eligible for the program, creators must be at least 18 years old, meet a minimum follower account, and reach a certain number of video views. Creators must also publish high-quality original content that is longer than one minute

Our Take: The announcement lacked specific details on eligibility requirements, minimum video views, and payout calculations. We anticipate the details will be available when the program is more publicly available. The Creativity Program could be Creator Fund 2.0 under a different name, and likely it is a way to get higher quality, longer-form original content on the site. It’s good that TikTok is opening up more opportunities for creators to get paid, but we would like to see a program in place that is more inclusive for a broader set of creators and content types.

EVERYONE WILL BE A CREATOR: THAT’S ROBLOX’S VISION

Roblox is using gen AI to allow every user to become a creator by creating items, skins, clothing, and even full-on experiences on the platform. Daniel Sturman , the CTO of Roblox, has laid out the vision of the company to use AI to help creators build things easily. Users can create customized experiences and personalization, like creating a red car that has car functionality built into it.?

We’re excited about the potential of Roblox's innovation. Thinking really out of the blox (see what I did there?), we’d love to see Roblox build an interface to translate what works on Roblox to other metaverse platforms, which would give creators more potential to create things and move them around.

INSTAGRAM LAUNCHES BROADCAST CHANNELS

Instagram has launched Broadcast Channels, a mobile feature for creators to build deeper connections with their audience and interact with their communities. It is a public messaging tool where creators can send texts, photos, videos, voice notes, polls, and other items to people who have joined their channels. In the future, creators will be able to bring on other creators to do collaborations and collect questions for "ask me anything" sessions. Broadcast Channels can be limited to a creator's paid subscribers for exclusive content. The feature is available on Instagram and will soon be available on Facebook.?

We see this feature as a blend of Discord and YouTube's Community tab functionality. Creators can interact with their fans more closely and have a direct connection with them. Community building is important for all creator-focused platforms.

CHATBOT BATTLES GET WEIRD

Let's talk about the weird side of chatbots. Recently, there have been some stories about Bing chatbot and how people are anthropomorphizing it to the point of falling in love with it or even having arguments with it. We’re not entirely surprised by these developments since we are still in the early stages of chatbot development, and it's natural that there are limitations to their programming. However, it's important to note that there are potential risks with chatbots that need to be addressed.

People can become vulnerable to the anthropomorphism that comes with chatbots, and if not programmed properly, there could be potential harm caused to themselves or others. This is why Isaac Asimov's three laws of robotics are important. They establish guardrails to ensure that chatbots do not harm humans.

YOUTUBE JUST ANNOUNCED TWO NEW SHORTS METRICS

YouTube has introduced two new metrics for Shorts, one for the number of times a video is shown in the feed, and the other for the percentage of viewers who watched the video versus swiped away. These metrics will allow creators to better understand the performance of their Shorts within the feed.?

We are thrilled to see more metrics available for Shorts!

META LAUNCHED PAID VERIFICATION JUST LIKE TWITTER!

Meta is following in the footsteps of Twitter – they are launching paid verification, where creators can pay $12 a month on the web or $15 a month via Apple, iOS, or Android to get a verification badge on Instagram and Facebook. We are not big fans of the move, and it feels like it’s preying on creators, the people helping to fuel the platforms.?

Unlike some other platforms, at least folks already verified will not lose their badge. Also, Meta is attempting some verification by requiring creators to send in a photo of their ID, although this may not be enough to prevent fake IDs from being used.
