Leadership or Management?

I was absolutely delighted last weekend when one of the team, off his own back, saw an opportunity and grasped it with both hands. He showed Leadership, which will no doubt lead to Management, but unlike many who are given a management role, and simply see it as a chance to instruct, he leads by example.?He got his colleagues together, suggested a plan, explained the benefits, and demonstrated what to do, then collectively critiqued what they had done.

He will go far, and will evolve into a management role, but all too often I see managers who do not lead.

?Maybe, it would be a better title if we called people Leaders not Managers in many roles. It might just be our culture, because I think I am more of a Leader than a Manager.?In fact, this week, after over 40 years in the trade, I’ve realised I want Leaders, setting the pace, setting the example, showing how, and then the Management becomes so much easier!?????????????

Excellent post Robin, and I couldn't agree more. A true manager will lead from the front, give the team the freedom to make choices and allow them to try new things, there is no need to micro-manage staff, and every need to allow the team to grow, coach and mentor people, say thanks and give recognition where it's due...

Robin morning, as usual a Ronseal moment, I too agree we need leaders rather than managers, however in many respects they need to be empowered to be a leader. I know you allow your Maagers to manage but it’s so much about you selecting the correct staff at the time. I’ve always loved home grown staff but very few of us seem to have the time to train them !!
