Robin’s diary - Update from a hospital bed!!
Following on from last week’s diary about my bad back …… I’ve spent the last week on my back in a hospital bed with a far lateral disc herniation. It’s a very painful and debilitating condition, but I have started the recovery and can now withstand the pain to stand up for a few minutes, so small steps hopefully making big progress.
Being in hospital has shown me how the world is changing - whilst having visitors is great, I have spent a lot of my time on my phone - talking, texting, emailing, and using social media in a wonderful way - with more friends than I could ever see, sending their best wishes, commenting, interacting and passing time, without the uncomfortable visiting time when the conversation runs out and both parties are looking at the clock!!!
The social media revolution has certainly provided a massive benefit to my recovery - mates who I might speak to once or twice a year have been in touch, so it’s proved a good excuse for a chat, and all because they found out on social - so I can honestly say it’s been a massive help to keeping me occupied which must have improved my mental state and recovery process.
Once again a product finds a great use that it certainly was never invented for, social media and its role in medical recovery -now that’s a subject some university or intellectual will spend a fortune to research, but there is no need – I can assure them it works and it helps – there’s no need to spend any money investigating!
‘It’s a dialogue, not a monologue, and some people don’t understand that. Social media is more like a telephone than a television.’ Amy Jo Martin
