The Robert's Tale

One of my best travel stories is about the people I photograph. I and my photographer colleagues had a few appointments lined up, including one with the Roberts. We were set to take their pictures on the ship, especially on the open decks during the beautiful golden hour.

This particular day was a sea day - no ports or land in sight. Each morning at 10 am, Captain Steven's voice resonated through the ship, sharing our current location, our course, and the prevailing weather. Even though it looked sunny, he said it'd get windy by evening. I hoped the weather would somehow get better because there was a challenge: the Roberts were celebrating their 50th anniversary. They radiated a love that had endured through time, yet their age suggested vulnerability to the gusty winds that loomed ahead.

By evening, other appointments got canceled because of the wind. I wasn't sure if the Roberts would show up, but they did, right on time and super excited.

I took some pictures of them inside the ship to start. But we had to go to Deck 10, on the top at the ship's crown, where the wind was strong. Even standing straight was a battle, let alone posing for a photo when you're in your 70s. But the Roberts were determined.

Deck 10 was like a rollercoaster due to the rocking ship and wild wind. Yet, they stayed put. I had to remain steady too, holding two cameras, and clicking the perfect shot when their hair wasn't flying all over. I was inspired by their commitment and love for each other. Their energy charged me up.

At that moment, I realized their courage on the windy deck mirrored the challenges they faced in their 50 years of marriage. Their love, unshakeable like a ship riding the waves, became a story I'd never forget.
