ROBBERIES AT ERIN MILLS TOWN CENTRE AND SHERWAY GARDENS MALL - 11/05/2022
We reported briefly on the two robberies at the above locations in our LPB 33 of 11 May 2022. Following are further details:
Erin Mills Town Centre, Mississauga ON
At approximately 5.25 pm on 11 May 2022 six persons arrived at a jewellery store in Erin Mills Town Centre for a pre-booked appointment. The store was using its draw-across security gate to restrict access. Although store management?had instructed employees not to admit more than two persons at a time, four of the six were admitted. Once inside, one of the four produced a firearm and another what appeared to be a taser. Staff were forced to open showcases and the robbers took the jewellery. When leaving, the robbers had difficulty with the security gate and it slowed down the last to leave sufficiently that he was able to restrained by mall security and two public-spirited?passers-by. This person was subsequently?arrested.
Sherway Gardens, Etobicoke ON
Two males carrying duffel bags and a crowbar entered a retail jewellery store in Sherway Gardens Mall in Etobicoke ON. Staff were threatened and the manager was assaulted, though fortunately not seriously. Staff were forced to open showcases and hand over jewellery. There were five or six other customers in the store at the time; fortunately, none were hurt. The two were in the store for approximately two and a half minutes. Employees commented that the robbers' demeanor was calm and that they appeared to be in no hurry at any time, including when they left the store. Employees also commented that the robbers may be the same persons who were involved in a very similar robbery at the same store approximately two weeks prior.
Comment: we assess jewellery stores in and around the Toronto area remain at extreme risk of robbery. Jewellers should continue to exercise extreme caution.?We strongly recommend jewellers implement some or all of the measures contained in our LPB 34/2022 of today's date.
