Episode Highlights

In this podcast relaunch after a hiatus, Marcel features a conversation he had with his good friend and often co-host, Robb Holman. The twist? You'll hear Marcel actually interviewing Robb about his new book on Robb's own podcast, the Inside Out Leadership podcast . This podcast "swap" was too good to pass up, so we re-launched with it on Love In Action! Here are the key highlights of this compelling conversation:

  • The book Lessons from Abdul focuses on restoring the needed and timely balance between receiving and giving. However, Robb highlights the hidden power of receiving from anyone, anytime.
  • Robb shares that the act of genuinely receiving falls into three buckets: help or support, opinions or perspectives, and praises or compliments. Robb and Marcel discuss what receiving looks like and some of the struggles that come with receiving. Marcel opens up about pride getting in the way of receiving affirming words. Later in the episode, Robb elaborates on the barriers to receiving and the steps to work through them.?

  • Robb shares that many studies show that when you share stories about your life and you’re committed to doing so on an ongoing basis with your team members, so much magic comes in and out of that place.
  • Robb shares a story about his childhood working with his coach, Abdul, the namesake of the book, and the lessons he learned about building bonds and opening one's mind to learning from others.?
  • The benefits of receiving graciously are many. Here's Robb: “This exchange of receiving leads to more selfless service, not selfish service…we receive deeply so we can give more greatly."
  • Bringing home the interview, Robb shares a moving story about his wife ringing the bell for her last chemotherapy treatment. He explains how they have opened their hearts to receiving and have been able to receive in so many ways during this time. He explains that it is not selfish, even the opposite of that—that on the other side, he and his wife will be able to give as they have before, and that is the hidden power of receiving.?
