RoadTrip Because That is How it's Done..

I had to do my first “Visa Run” in years yesterday.

Here you are required to have a residency visas that you receive from owning your own business, being an employee, or being sponsored by your family.

My daughters’ visas had just expired and so we were told they had to be cancelled before we could issue them new visas.

So I cancelled both expired visas

And went to issue them new ones and that is where the fun started.

I’ll spare you all the details but effectively I was told that if I wanted my eldest girl sponsored in the passport I presented I had to leave the country and come back with her so that she could have an entry stamp (the passport with the last visa was nearly expired).

They couldn’t do it on the spot.

So we had to jump in a car and drive 2 hours to the border..? spend an hour or so navigating the complexity of a round-trip visa run and then 2 hours back home.

The kids were well but it was exhausting after a full day of school.

And it got me thinking.

Processes and systems are excellent but always there needs to be a human element of flexibility and means to override what a process demands when the situation warrants it.

In your business do you have your customers do unnecessary actions or steps because that is how things are done?

Do you annoy your staff with time wasting processes because that is the way things are done?

Are you stuck in a rut…. Because you’re following..? that is the way things are done?

All it takes sometimes is a fresh pair of eyes to see when things should be different than how it’s done.
