Statistics Of Road Accidents In India (2019-2021)

Some time back, I was referencing to MORTH (Ministry of Road Transport and Highways) website to pull out some statistics or reports covering road accidents in India.

Upon searching for almost 2 years, I realized that the data present on the website isn’t updated. There is no data for the years 2019, 2020 and 2021 on the Ministry website.

But I needed these figures to understand the impact of government initiatives, various Ngo's efforts in awareness as well as advancements in road safety equipment.?

I was kind of intrigued to check what are the figures now on Road accidents as we are building highways, expressways, and national highways across India.

We filed one RTI to enquire about various statistics pertaining to road accidents in India.

We surveyed LinkedIn users to find out and the results are in! The most frequent road violation is using a mobile phone while driving, followed by not following the road signs, not wearing seatbelts & helmets

Since 2000, there have been 81,49,079 accidents, 24,24,251 deaths and 88,60,070 injuries, making India’s roads one of the most dangerous in the world.?

  • India has the highest number of road fatalities per year. 11% of 1.35 million global road crash deaths occur in India.
  • - At least 10% of total road deaths involve minors, with 32% of victims falling in the age group of 18 - 30 years and 33% in the age group of 30 - 45 years.

#1-Government's Recent Initiative For Road Safety

The government is pushing serious efforts toward Road Safety. With just a 1% vehicle population we still account for 10% of the road fatalities. Its time for India to reduce it <1%.

.The?#WorldBank?approved a $250 million loan for the Indian government's road safety program that addresses the high road accident fatality rate in the country.?

#2- Better road safety measures could save half a million lives annually worldwide

New global and country-level estimates suggest that routinely wearing helmets and seat belts, obeying speed limits, and avoiding driving drunk could save between 347,000 and 540,000 lives worldwide every year.

The benefits of more motorcyclists wearing helmets would be the biggest in China, where 13,703 lives could be saved every year, followed by Brazil (5,802 lives), and India (5,683 lives), says the study published in The Lancet.
