??Road safety, a key topic for innovation !
On the occasion of the road safety week, I wanted to talk to you about a subject that is close to our hearts and on which we have been working for several years with the Association de la Prévention Routière. In this article, you will discover the platform and the solution developed by the innovation and that we still operate today.? ?
Testimony ?
A journalist for 30 years, Anne Lavaud, General Delegate of the Association Prévention Routière, took over the reins of the association in 2015 and decided to apply a principle dear to the press: cross-referencing sources. In concrete terms, this means no longer sticking to the data transmitted by the Ministry of the Interior and linked solely to road accidents. An Observatory was born, which now provides valuable information on user behaviour.?
The Association Prévention Routière is an NGO created in 1949 by insurers. We carry out 30,000 actions each year in the 95 French departments. We used to focus on the accident, without knowing anything about the beginning of the story.? ?
When she arrived, Anne realised that the challenge was to make the French understand the reality of risk. "They know the rules, but don't always respect them. She also noticed that all the Association's work was based on the number of accidents, injuries and deaths. ?
This posed two problems: the paucity of sources, of course, but also the narrowness of vision. We focused on the accident, without knowing anything about the beginning of the story. And we were building all our prevention speeches on the basis of what in the end is rare in a life: the accident.? ?
This is how Anne came up with the idea of collecting data on all aspects of mobility.? ?
With the Director of Research and Studies, we decided to launch both a behavioural analysis and a declarative study. We thought that the risk area should lie between the two. We went to see the research institutes, which looked at us with round eyes... Finally, it was thanks to Opinion Way, with whom I used to work, that we crossed paths with Inetum.
The "match" is immediate. The Innovation team immediately understood the interest and value of this hybrid project. ?
With a limited budget, it was with our team that we found the solution of skill sponsorship to support this great cause. ?
Other players involved were the French Insurance Federation and the Institute of Actuaries, which gave this highly ambitious and innovative approach the scientific backing it deserved.
The New Observatory of Road Risks and Mobility was born. We aggregated third-party data (meto, speed limits, etc.) and created a panel, Les Eclaireurs, who download an app capable of associating behavioural data with their movements.? ?
It took two years for these foundations to become stable. Our team was then able to start communicating, at the rate of a campaign every six weeks. These campaigns are fed directly by the Observatory and linked to current events. For example, we make public data on break times during holiday departures. Or on the respect of 30 km/h zones at the beginning of the school year. ?

The New Observatory of Road Risks and Mobility (NORRM) takes stock of a major Smartphone as a Sensor project. ?
5 million kilometres, 306,000 hours of cumulative driving time, over 100,000 speed bumps encountered... ?
Christophe Ramond, Director of Research for the French road safety association, and Jean-Paul Muller, AI Global Practice Manager for the Inetum group, will open the NORRM's bonnet for you to discover the entire data exploitation chain from their capture to their use as communication content by the French road safety association. ?
This association allowed us to study all types of metrics and the field of possibilities for using this type of platform for other use cases such as tracking, behavioral analysis, etc. Thanks to this, Inetum's innovation teams were able to develop a Smaas solution: PLATYPUS. ?
Platypus is a mobile solution that allows to capture data (speed, location, acceleration, activity, ...) in a multimodal context via sensors present in smartphones. Thanks to our team of Data Scientist, these data are exploited, transformed and crossed with other external data (weather, road, ...) to obtain relevant information that will help to put effective actions and make judicious decisions. ?
After the use of these data in the framework of road prevention, our teams continue to explore other use cases to which we can bring value and all our know-how in terms of data exploitation in various fields: mobility, health, ... In this context, data collection campaigns are regularly carried out by volunteers within the various teams of inetum to train and improve our algorithms. ?
