Giving the Green Light to Traffic Enforcement: The Effort to Eliminate Traffic Fatalities
Some cities around the state are ready to rely on automated traffic enforcement to help keep their streets safer.
Alexandria is keeping family safety front and center. In accordance with state law, the city announced this week that speed cameras now operate near a pair of elementary schools and a pair of middle schools.

According to numbers by the Department of Transportation, since the red-light safety camera pilot program started in November 2022, a total of 6,311 citations have been issued at all 10 of the locations.

The school district, law enforcement, and community collaboration are important to create a united front for a successful implementation of a School Bus Safety Program.

Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed a bill that will allow school districts to use cameras designed to capture images of drivers who illegally pass school buses.
The law (SB 766), will take effect in July.
The Florida Department of Education last year conducted a survey of school-bus drivers and found widespread instances of vehicles illegally passing stopped buses. The survey results from 2022 show that on a single day, 7,867 illegal passes were made based on the observations of 6,416 school bus drivers who completed the survey, a Senate staff analysis of the bill said.
