On the Road

I'm in California this week a state I've visited regularly since 1996.

Outside Scotland, this is where I feel most at home in the world.

My tribe are to be found here. The visionaries, the changemakers, the risk-takers the individuals who through the use of technology have created our modern world.

This is where you will find StartUps that have gone on to become the biggest companies in the world and the most powerful brands.

This is where I learned to dance! I discovered my talent for creating connections.

"You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever". Steve Jobs

Whenever I visit I am re-energised, I am reminded that anything is possible and those I meet remind me that ideas, talent, and strategy are all important but delivery is the ultimate tool to create change and bring success.

In the articles below I explore three traits which I believe to be of critical importance to the entrepreneur

  1. Refuse-to-lose, a phrase introduced to me by my good friend and colleague Paul Forrest has become a mantra to me.
  2. Take Responsibility. When you are wrong, promptly admit this, take corrective action and move on. This is an incredibly difficult skill to master but also essential.
  3. Stay true to your vision. Don't ever forget why you decided to commence an entrepreneurial journey. this is your "north star" this is your why.

Articles

1. Refuse To Lose

I believe that your ability to "make things happen" as an entrepreneur is down to the level of belief you maintain in delivering your vision. The desire to deliver this empowers you to overcome any challenge.

2. Take responsibility

This article has generated huge amounts of engagement for me this week. The question I am asked is "What did you do wrong".

3. The Power of a Clear Vision

Stop reading, take a breath, and write down your vision for your venture, business or project. Then read this article!

This week

I will be splitting my time between San Francisco and San Jose this week following an amended agenda. Be sure to drop me a note if you would like to meet and if you are in town I hope you will join us at our San Jose, "Scottish Innovation" gathering.

Big week for Scottish Business Network as we celebrate summer with a cruise on the Thames. If you are in London this week be sure to sign-up as this promises to be a very special evening of networking and celebration.

I think item 3 has been my struggle over the last few months but I have stuck with it, and just keep reminding myself, that if I want the outcome I wrote down I need to stick with the plan??
