On the Road...
In my third straight week of work-related travel this month, I cannot help but compare myself to Sal Paradise. If you don't know who that is, please visit your local library. Okay– So, I don't have a reckless travel companion, nor am I hitch-hiking. I'm not riding in a '47 Cadillac, or a '37 Ford. I'm flying to all of my destinations and my company is paying for it... a far cry from gallivanting across the country. People complain about how unglamorous 'living out of a suitcase' really is- I'm going change that by striking the right balance. Yes I miss my family, and no I don't like to fly, but I am making a conscious effort to make the best use of my time by working when I need to work, and also experiencing the places I get to visit. It makes traveling that much more tolerable, and I am collecting some interesting stories along the way.
This morning I had an Uber driver who grew up in Jim Crow Alabama and has 7 kids, 8 grandkids, and 14 great-grandkids. Last week I watched a sunset with my Aunt and Uncle at Half Moon Bay, and also rode a cable car with an old friend. The week before that I took a conference call from a coffee shop, just steps from Ocean Beach. Just a few examples but you get the point.
So here are my 4 rules for being on the road:
1) Strike the right balance between work and 'not work.'
2) Always talk to people. You'll learn something.
3) Be courteous. Because life's too short to be an asshole.
4) Make time to see family and friends when you can.
Until next time...
