The Road to First Class: A University Experience - Ep 1 (THE ORIENTATION)
I miraculously found myself in the shores of Central University awaiting to be officially oriented as a student of the noble institution. The first ever block I knew so well is the Trinity Hall because that is where I spent most of my time during the year. Lectures, social events, church services, etc… all were conducted within this single block. The orientation phase wasn’t only about the school introducing and educating us about the principles and values of the school, but also encompassed the point where I had to tour the environs of the university both within and outside. I had to self-educate myself because not everything pertinent that can be spoon-fed to the audience.
Life in the university was different from high school. For example, no school uniforms, you are not forced to study, freedom to do whatever you want, course structure as we don’t study same courses over the years, etc. Due to all these factors, there was a necessity for adjustment. I cared less of my education after the official orientation. According to the school, you should have a CGPA of 3.6 in order to graduate with a first class degree. Other universities have a CGPA of 3.5 for first class. I lost hope on my ability to achieve one not just because of the 3.6 mark point but due to the detailed explanation on how it can be achieved. I lost hope after the orientation because I felt like I wasn’t that smart and intelligent enough to achieve a first class. I saw myself as an average student and this affected my overall performance at the end of the first year. Well, I had a CGPA of 3.281 in level 100 which puts me in the second class upper category. With this assessment, I envisaged myself graduating with a second class upper degree.
