What should we expect from COP 28?
COP28 is right around the corner and will be the place where global leaders will gather to address climate change, one of the most critical challenges of our time. However, the appointment of Sultan Al Jaber as the President-Designate of COP28 has caused controversy due to his dual role as the UAE Minister of Industry and CEO of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC). This has raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest, as ADNOC is a major oil and gas producer, while the conference's purpose is to combat climate change.
We left COP 27 with a significant outcome, the creation of a Loss and Damage Fund to help climate-vulnerable developing countries. However,? the lack of substantial commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and phase out fossil fuels at COP27 has proven to be a roadblock in limiting our ability to fight climate change.
The challenges for COP28 are outlined, focusing on clarity on how the Loss and Damage Fund will operate and the importance of fulfilling climate finance commitments. We hope that an emphasis is placed on the necessity of transitioning away from fossil fuels and the role of the Global Stocktake in assessing progress toward climate goals.
The controversial appointment of Sultan Al Jaber as the President-Designate is a central point of criticism. Despite being the CEO of a major oil and gas company, Al Jaber aims to engage the private sector in climate action and promote renewable energy. Some argue that oil-producing countries should have a role in climate discussions, while others see a conflict of interest given the UAE's fossil fuel expansion plans and lack of mention of fossil fuels in official documents.
There is some further controversy on the UAE's contrasting position as a significant oil producer and its efforts to invest in renewable energy and announce net-zero initiatives. The President-Designate argues for a pragmatic approach to transitioning to cleaner energy sources while maintaining the existing system.
In reflection, what we expect from COP28 is a fight to realign the world on its commitment to this fight. There are critical concerns about the potential influence of the fossil fuel industry in climate discussions, given the appointment of an oil company executive to a leadership role in a climate conference. However, we have faith that the world will come together to deliver actionable plans on how we embark on the greatest challenge facing humanity.?

?? Rewind
Greenly has had the privilege of sponsoring and attending WEAR Toronto hosted by Fashion Takes Action ! As fast fashion takes the world’s consumers by storm, the fashion industry is taking a step back to incorporate more circularity in their materials life cycle. The conference taught us more about the innovations and strides being made in the industry to be more conscious of its impact to the growing concerns around climate change. Here are our key takeaways.
Supplier Engagement is Necessary
Fashion brands themselves do not do much emitting. Carbon emissions are found largely up the value chain as wholesale suppliers are responsible for much of the carbon debt accrued by retailers. Finding the right suppliers and ensuring their disclosure of GHG emissions gives brands the best chance to commit to their Net Zero goals.?

Technology is Crucial to Sustainability
Our greatest ability in this day and age is to continue innovating. Technology will serve as our sword in this fight against climate change. Without more R&D in renewable materials and SaaS to help with management, we can’t ever be sure we are doing enough. Building better garments and building better tools is how the fashion industry can move forward in their path to Net Zero.
We would like to thank Fashion Takes Action for the wonderful event!
